If I want to back-up the contents (10GB) of one PC to another, without a hub, is it a patch cable that I use?

yeah, use a "cross over cable" available from all good commputer stores.

You need two Ethernet Cards and UTP Crossover Cable. Patch is straight through AFAIK and you'll need a hub/switch plus two lengths of that cable type

Using a cross-over cable, you plug it into both machine's, and copy and paste. Their is a similair USB type item, which is basically 2 USB wires connected to a hub. Might be an idea if the PC's support USB, and you lack a PCI slot.

Hmm, didn't think of USB, I have loads of PCI slots anyway, so I'll cost it out.

take the hard drive out of one of the computers and put it in as slave on the second.

I've though of that, but following the accidental deletion of 1GB of documents (it's OK back-ups were made and no pic files were lost :D) last week I'd prefer to back up first. :D  :D

Firewire (IEEE 1394) is another option if both support it. AFAIK you can just run a cable between them, no need for intermediate hubs, and it's faster than USB (but not USB 2)
