OK I'm new at this so bare with me...

I am trying to make a custom 404 error page for my site. I know how to do it but I don't know if I should.
I am currently just using some space on my brother's server and I was wondering if it's possible to have a different ".htaccess" file for my directory. If I did have a ".htaccess" file that allows for a custom 404 page in my directory would it affect my brother's main site? I don't want to break anything so I thought I'd check with ye guys before messing around.

By placing your .htaccess in the root directory of your site (or any directory above that) You can have your own custom error documents. You could have custom docs for each directory if you wished. You said you know how to do it so I'll spare you a technichal explaination.
Trying things out is often the best way to learn - breaking something is unlikely.

Did you ever post something up and forget about it? Doh! redface.gif

I started messing around anyway and as far as I can see there was no damage done.

Now to come up with a cool 404 page.
    Thanks for the help guys!
