merrion freeroll

I went to the freeroll in the merrion last night, made it to the last table and went out in 5th place. There were 4 tickets up for grabs and 20euro for 5th. So I made 10euro profit for the night :)

I had a average stack going into the final table and then lost a big chunk of it on AKc.

It was down to 5 of us and I was bb and smallest stack.
1 caller limped in, flop came 10, 8, rag. I had a Q,8 went all-in. Yer man thought about it for a while and eventually called with A, rag. He caught an A on the river.

I was pretty confident he didnt have a pair when the flop came so decided to take my chances and go all-in. The blinds were about to go up so i figured i had to make my move as i was the smallest stack. Maybe I should have folded and waited for better cards to move in on......

That was my first time in the merrion, bit of a strange place (compared to the fitz).
I would think you should be polite and helpful towards your customers as they are the ones who keep you in business (even if they are only there for the freeroll).
The guy at the registration desk wasn't very friendly or helpful, he seemed to be annoyed that he had to go to the effort of signing us up as members. The same applied to the rest of the staff, there was a bit of a strange atmosphere. Maybe they were just having a bad night or something.

The freeroll itself was quite different to that in the fitzwilliam on a thursday night.
When people got knocked out in the re-buy period they left, only a few people took a re-buy. The same story with the top-ups they didnt seem to be as popular as i would have expected.

Ah the atmosphere. Yes it's been discussed before but each to their own. As for me my boycott of the place is still going strong.

yeah I've read some of the discussions about it alright.... I might give their freeroll a try another night but i sooner the fitz.

Do you think the all-in with the pair of 8s was a bad move? If I was him i wouldnt have called, but maybe he thought i had nothing and was just buying the pot...

Its annoying how you can stop concentrating for a second and mess up a few hours of good work.

I don't think it was that bad a move. His call with A high was far more dodgy.

I was at this last night as well. (Hey, I was in town and it was too late to enter the Fitz game.) There were about 75-80 people at it, yet they only took in €460. Crazy, cheap-ass students.

In saying that, I didn't rebuy or top-up myself. :) Built a nice stack but took a couple of unlucky hits on the second-last table leaving me short-stacked on the final table. There, I took a couple of fair beats for a change and went out 7th.

Podgeen, you were unlucky on that last hand. (I was the guy that stayed on to deal for the table.) You both had the same stack-size so one of you was going out. He had A6o and had hit bottom pair on the flop against your middle pair. I don't know what the hell he was doing limping in with A6o for 1/5th of his stack anyway. The general standard of play there is absolutely atrocious, even by freeroll standards.

    Hand of the night:
Blinds 50/100. I'm on the button with a stack of 1250 and get dealt 72o. (Can you see where this is going yet?)
Two limpers and then I make it 250 to go. Both blinds fold and the two limpers come along for the ride. (Big mistake.)
Flop A,5,3 rainbow. Checked to me so I bet 600 expecting them to fold but first limper thinks and calls. Other player folds.
Turn is a 4, filling a straight when I hadn't even realised that I had a gutshot draw on the flop. :o
I happily go all-in for my last 400 and as our cards are turned over, I announce "hammer". He then turns over 52o for the same straight. (52o?? wtf?!?)
Ah well, I think to myself, at least I get a split pot out of it.
River is a 6 which gives me a higher straight to the 7.
Hell yeah, gimme that pot!! :)

Yeah I remember you now, cheers for hanging around and dealing.....

Remember when you went all-in and won with the Q high flush (i think it was a Q)
I had AKc. I never noticed that 3 of the same suit had flopped and made a stupid raise hoping he'd fold or my AK would stand up.
He re-raised 5k which i stupidly called. Just as I had called i looked at the flop again and saw that there was a flush draw. Stupid play on my behalf, I should have re-reaised your all-in before the flop with my AK and he would probably have folded, but then again considering the way people were playing he might have called me.

I lost over 10k in that hand. If i had laid down the AK when I didnt hit anything on the flop I would have been in a much better position and would not have had to go all-in with the pair of 8s. I think the AK hand was the one that lost it for me.

Then again if he didnt take those chips from me he would not have be in a position to call the all-ins from the lower stacks later on.

    Hello hello,

I was the guy with long hair sitting to your right Podge on the final table. Hand of the night for me was when we were at the last two tables. I was on bb with 77 with not a great stack and you limped on the sb with Ax if i remember correctly. Then there was a third player (guy with the ipod) who called all-in for less than the bb. Flop came QQ6, you bet and i thought about it for a while, looked at you in the eye, thought you looked really nervous but i folded anyway, not wanting to get knocked out so close to the final table. Anyway, you and ipod guy turned over your cards and i saw your ace high. Maybe i should go by my first instincts in future.

I got pretty lucky on the final table... trebling up with K3o. Hit a A-5 striaght. Then i managed to double up twice in a row with 99. First all-in preflop against AT then same again against 66.

Anyways, i'm off to the 100+10... :) see you later.

Oh as for the atmosphere in the Merrion, i can't say i mind it... or maybe i'm strange.

haha i was trying not to look nervous! by staring back at you when you stared at me :)

I figured if i didnt raise there you would have raised and I would have folded.

Well done on the last table, great play with the streak of all-ins at the end.

How did you get on in the 100 last night?

hey musician, why the boycott of the merrion??

I'm curious. Agreed, it's not the fitz but a total boycott?

    I'm curious.

Anyone likes to ask me in person then I'll discuss it but for boards the Merrion is a good poker club for most and I won't go into it here.

That was my AT. You got 99 the previous hand and took down a nice pot. On the following hand when you went all in you said "All in again." I read that as all in again but also "I've got a med pair again". I knew if I had two overcards it would be a coin flip and after a quick scan of stacks (I was approx joint short stack) I decided to make my stand. Well played anyway man. More power to ya.
Also a big thanks to Crumbs for dealing and for his great all round table etiquette, something I have to work on as I'm mainly an online player.

Any freeroll on this Thursday in the Merrion?

Played tight, didn't pick up anything good (only trouble hands that i wasn't willing to play) and was eventually shortstacked. Folded around to me. I was on sb with A3o and pushed all-in. Blinds were 200-400 and i had a little over 2000 in chips. bb thought for a fair amount of time then called. He turned over Q3o and hit a Q on the flop... ahh well. I ended up 12th out of about 40.

Highlight of the night for me was when Liam Flood was told he couldn't play (at my table!) because he was 2 minutes late and hadn't rang to let them know of his tardiness.

Would have been nice to play a pro, maybe next time...

12th out of 40 was not bad considering you didnt pick up anything good.

What was the prize pool like? i assume you didnt get anything for 12th...

I was playing in that tourney too and likewise, I didn't pick up any good starting hands (77 was my best pocket pair and AJ was my best Ace-kicker) but I still won it anyway.

The top 5 places were paid and part of first prize was a ticket for the Merrion's €300+€30 super-sat for WSOP tickets. We did a deal at the last three to split the cash and play on for the ticket. I beat Willow heads-up and after one hand she called me "a little brat". That's my proudest moment in poker! :)

To wombatman, I think the Merrion is closed from today to Sunday inclusive (well the poker games anyway). Go to the Fitz instead.

    Nice one man, congratulations!

Have you played the 100+10 before? I take it you bought in and didn't use a ticket, correct me if i'm wrong.

That was my second time at the 100+10. 12th was alot better than my first appearance.

Didn't buy in. I had a ticket from a previous freebie.
I played that €100 game once before and placed 4th in it, so I guess I like it. :)
