What are the rates like does anyone know. Is it nessary to buy a bes.Or have accesee to one

As regards to a BES, you don't need one if you can leave your outlook client running on your office PC while you're away. You'll get all your emails on the road via "Redirector".

However, you won't be able to synchronise new Contacts and Calendar entries until you dock the Blackberry with the PC.

Not sure about the rates, but on O2 it's something in the region of €25 per month for the first 2MB and you're charged extra after that. 2MB is plenty
