I'll try and make this as short as possible...
I started working in this place 3 years ago and after approx 6 months was made manager and given a major raise with the promise of more work and responsibilities etc to come. Well I got the raise but never got any more responsibilities and only the owner , general manager and accountant know about my "promotion" ie no one else was told about it not even the people I was in charge of. It's now 2 and a half years later. My other half is in hospital going on 3 weeks and was very serious for a while there so I took 2 weeks off and was looking after the kids and visiting the hospital. Well in last weeks paper while I was off there was a advert for a manager required for my place of work. My position is being advertised. I'm back in work at the moment and won't see the owner till the weekend.....what should I do????

Ring or email the manager and ask what the story is?

    That sucks!
It is wierd that you were promoted and it was not announced! Sounds fishy! I agree with goodshape though... confront your manager about this.

why didnt you declare your self promoted to everyone, when it happened?

at least you got the pay rise

I did tell people but it was an off the record kinda thing because I figured it was up to the management to tell them.
I will confront them about it but I dunno I might just throw in the towel and tell em to go to hell and quit.

thats the easy way out, your first responsibility is to your family and not to your pride, ask them what happening when you next see your boss

That would be an unfair demotion due to family situations. Is your title recognised on paper?

No the whole thing was done in the office with accountant ,owner and general manager. Deal was done I got the money and nothing else was said. The only time I was refered to as a manager was when there was an unhappy client that asked for a manager then I was called in to solve the problem.

Same thing happened to a guy I used to work with a few years back. This was in a very large, very well known company in the financial services industry.

Anyway upon reading the advert in the paper for his job, he marched straight up to the executive floor of the building and walked into the private office of the HR Director - and smashed his nose in without saying a word. He then proceeded to march into the MD's office and repeated the act. In the end he was dragged from the building by the Guards who were promptly called in by the PA's.

Anyway I don't suggest you take this course of action ! If I'm not mistaken, it is illegal to advertise someones job while they are still doing the job and haven't been sacked or anything. Check into that yourself - I could be wrong.

Second, to give you a pay rise and then not give you the extra responsibilities is just weird - it's always the other way around in my experience. Can't think of a reason why they might do that, and also why it was never made generally known in the company.

Why was this such an "informal" arrangement as you described it ? Honestly it's hard to know what's going on here.

If there's nothing more you have to add to the story and everything is hunky dory regarding your employment record and performance etc., then hands down straight away you've got a very strong case against them in the Employment Appeals Tribunal. Especially with in excess of 3 years service.

Just one piece of advice - there are plenty of jobs out there for everyone at the moment. DO NOT let them get to you or run you down. There are a lot of employers out there who are just nothing more than complete basta**s and are not worth working for. Have personal experience of it myself very recently.

I can't think of anything I done wrong in the last 3 years. I admit when my other half was brought into hospital I didn't really give them much notice about taking the time off.
However, my wife didn't give me much notice of being rushed into hospital and I didn't stick an advert in the paper looking for a new one :D

well as far as i know they cannot cut your wages without your concent in writing. Do you get payslips where you work, you might want to hold onto these if you are going to enquire about why they are hiring a manager while you are still there.
