iPod trouble :(

Have a 40GB iPod (regular, not photo) about half full so far. Things gone blinky and when i try and turn it on first the Apple logo comes up, then a File image with a /!\ logo beside it. Also it makes slight whirring noises that I didn't notice before and theres a soft click during the middle of these.

I'm hoping it's not a hard-drive problem but if it's not does anyone have any suggestions? Could also be the iPod menu files or something. Is there any way to forcefully format it or anything. I've tried resetting it when it starts up but it doesn't do anything. Should I consider sending it to Apple to get it fixed?

If you update the firmware it will reformat the drive, but you'll lose all the music on it obviously enough.

I'll update the firmware then. Only problem is that it's not recognising iPod when I put it in.
