I heard the night life is supposed to be great in UCC aswell. It seems like a nice place overall, the people are friendly, great facilities. Hopefully I'll get in there!

I want to study Psychology and English Literature in Trinity, but the points are about 560 which is a bit of a nuisance. Hmmph. I'm still going for it anyway. My primary reasons for wanting to go to Trinity are that a) It is easy to get to, as I live on the dartline - UCD would be a lot more difficult, and I can just forget about DCU cos I want to live at home; b) I already know a lot of people there. And obviously, I think the course looks really interesting.

Medicine in Trinity. Bye bye social life! :P Want to go to Trinity because its ridiculously easy to get to, as opposed to UCD which takes me almost 2 hours to get to sometimes... Also, I know a load of people in Trinity.

UCC or UL are prob the best for me. No offence but when ever someone mentions 'trinners' I get images of upper class dubs- you know the type from boarding schools! Yes... I know i'm making a total generalisation and knowing my luck I'll offend everyone here! But it's just the vibe it gives off.

tcd gets the bulk of #1's in cao, but #1s are #1s and dont mean you get in there. it's a great college locationwise, smack bang in the centre of town, oconnell st, grafton st, henry st and temple bar all minutes away, but its not a very comfortable place and it has sfa for sports facilities.
ucd's no character whatsoever, just a load of concrete shoeboxes, but facilities are second to none (yes, ul, second to none!) and i can imagine a cracking social life with the 20000+ students.
i live in meath, im going to be in digs in portobello next year whether i get ucd, tcd or dit! tcd's a five min walk but ucd's a pain in the arse to get to. it's way too far out. dit's going to lose its appeal when it moves out of town too.

Well im moving to dublin, more than likely will be DCU. Not sure about anything really, but it will be a party nonetheless

Elec Eng in UCC. Its about two kilometres from me so it makes sense, also course that i want and all my friends live in here and are going there.

TCD it is for me (provided I get the all elusive first choice!). Well I wanted to go there or UCD and UCD is just waaaaay too away from me (2 buses - no thanks!) TCD is def easier, I think the courses are much of a muchness between them (law), however if I decide to move law and german up to number one (currently second) then its the only place I can do it in Dublin.
    So, TCD *woot*

    :)

well im not upper class dub, im not dub at all, but i have to say there's a much higher ****-factor in ucd, according to friends i have there. trinity students may appear well-read and their school has a tradition, if that's what you mean, but ucd gets it all- clonskeagh to one side, stillorgan&blackrock to the other, and donnybrook's finest to the north.
there arent too many boarding schools left for south county dubs, but the private schools are bigger feeders to tcd than ucd by a long shot. just under 50% of freshers in tcd are from private schools, its far lower in ucd.

"no character whatsoever, just a load of concrete shoeboxes"

Thats exactly what UL is, its just a load of red brick buildings sprawled all over the place, no character of individuality what so ever!!But i suppose that's what was modern at the time of building!!?
UCC however on the other hand is soooo class, fabulous old buildings and gorgeous gardens around them!Such a collegy feeling, if there is such a feeling!!?The craic down there is mighty!Supposedly CIT is the place to be if you want to go out.Probably the equivalent of Kilmuray Lodge and Hurlers in Limerick

I totally agree with you! I went to the open day in October (my main motivation being so that I could meet up with my boyfriend - he lives in Kerry and I live in Dublin) and I was really impressed. I'm not sure what I mean by this, but it seems to be just the right size... It's not so huge it's overwhelming, but is big enough to have a good mix of people. It seemed to have a real community feel about it. Also the campus is very pretty. However, I want to keep sponging off my parents for as long as possible so looks like I'm going to be a Trinners girl (my first, oh, six or seven choices are Trinity)

Yea i heard a lot of bad things about that course, highest dropout rate in any course in Ireland as far as I know.

    Engineering? Go to UCD.

You know the UCD medical faculty is based in Earlsfort Terrace, just off Stephen's Green?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 466 ✭✭Caoimhe

I do indeed, I was looking at it on Paddy's day :) However, its still further and if I was to do Law in UCD I'd have to trek out to Belfield which is ridiculously far away

Yea i heard a lot of bad things about that course, highest dropout rate in any course in Ireland as far as I know.

The reason it has the highest dropout rate is that people who go into the course(not everyone though) do not realise what is involved in engineering in college eg.30 hour week,Mathematical based course, lots of home study required

100% correct what you said there.

I would be the last person to put people off from going to a college but UCD (OR University College D**kheads as i prefer to call it :D ) is infested by these arrogant, snobby, cliquey D4/Southside muppets.

There is a horrible D4 culture out in that college. How do I know because I'm a 1st year student out there. Basically with the D4/Southsiders they are all cliquey and all stick together. They all know so many people out there they couldn't be bothered getting to know anyone else. Most of them are up their own arses as human beings and feel like they are the elite out in that place. Sadly now from what I see if you aren't going out into UCD in a big group of people it is going to be a huge challenge to achieve a social life out there.

My 1st year out in that college has been the most miserable and lonely year of my life. If i had known that there would be this type of vibe out in the place I would have thought twice about going there. Now I would not say this type of atmosphere applies to most of the college but in massive courses say Arts (which I do and would be where this clique atmosphere most exists) there is this type of snobby/cliquey thing going on with most of the students and it is not just D4s but also country people. My advice to anyone planning on going to UCD (or any college) who is not going with a group is to join as many clubs and societies as possible in freshers week. By this way of getting involved in college life you will almost certainly meet people with similar interests as you and decent people with who you can share your college experience with.

I really don't want to put people off UCD but i feel the need to warn people of this D4 culture out in that place. Avoid the D4 crew at all costs. If you do a smaller course out there you should meet people in your course easily but for the biggies most notibly Arts (1200+ people) you could encounter problems but you could get lucky with the people who you encounter. UCD is a big college but the facilities out there are second to none esp. 3 bars! :D

The bottom line of this post is that your course choice should be paramount but do consider other factors. Location, who you are going out there knowing, accomodation, lonliness and the pitfalls of homesickness should all be carefully considered. I didn't consider these things carefully and I partially regret it.

Best of luck with your course choices and most of all best of luck with the evil Leaving!

Not meaning to start arguements but you can't just generalise and say things like "avoid the D4 crew at all costs." Granted there are a few royal spoons from D4 in UCD but I know many people from D4 who are wonderful people and not at all like the stereotype. Most of them hate it. And I know my share of eejits from Clontarf who would give anything to be part of the stereotype.

I would be the last person to put all D4 people into the same category but from what I have and other people who I know most (not all) of them are like that. Oh I also know alot of even bigger twats from Clontarf. They should change Clontarf's postcode to D4 aswell.

Where is RCSI on this poll? I am abstaining. I hope to go there next year for Pharmacy.

Does anyone know about D4 cliques there? Or indeed anyone going there?

The reason that UCD's medical department is in Earlsfort Terrace is that when the Catholic University was first founded in the 1850s, it was in that location.

Bollox. I'm public school born and raised :)

Seriously though, I fell in love with the place a few weeks into first year. There's something deadly about it...not talking about the location, nothing like that. Yeah you get muppets in here, but you get muppets everywhere not depending on where they are from!

But anyways, that's really hardly the point...do the course you want to do, to hell with the people you perceive that are present! Because believe me, any ideas you have in your head about what college is like or what people are like will be extremely wrong! Best of luck in the Leaving.

I think I've replied to another of your posts bout pharmacy in RCSI, not sure if you saw it. There's no D4 cliques in my class anyway! (thankfully). There isn't really any type of clique. There are groups of friends yeah but we have so many labs you end up beside loadsa different people and chating away to them. It's a very friendly college, our class get on very well together as do the other pharmacy classes. Obviously there's the odd person you don't exactly love but apart from that its all friendly. It's very easy to make friends too due to the small class size.

hey, i'm a regualar person and i fully intend to go to trinity! thats an old stereotype from when only the "protestant ascendancy" could attend there. now UCDube is the place to be if your fake blond, orange and where boating shoes with trousers originally designed as part of a GAA kit. (yeah, great style altogether[can u feel the sarcasm, can you?])
