Depends if it's new coming from online stores or second hand.

New stuff was pretty hit and miss up until last year, if it's shipped DHL probability is high you'll get nailed, I got dozens of packages from SDS and they were never checked which was great but now they're gone.

    Thanks for the reply logic1.

Most of the stuff i get isn't fedex, just regular mail.
So far I haven't got a customs bill.
I did get a camera through fedex from HK.
Don't want to get hit for 21% of that.

I have gotten nailed about 1 time in 5 I think - one time I got a digital camera and An Post's delivery company (SDS / EMS?) lost it on me and finally got it to me 6 weeks later. By that time I had bought another camera, so I got stuck with two cameras, and the customs bill on the first one

Try asking the vendor to write "gift" on the parcel description, I think these are exempt - even if they are not, they are less likely to get stopped than parcels marked "electronics" etc.

    Thanks for the info eoin_s.
I've gotten stuff a lot more times than 5.
I know my luck will run out.........
I usually buy from experienced sellers who'll mark gift on the package
    so this helps.
And now the boss at work doesn't want me to send anymore stuff to work
'cause he doesn't want customs calling. :D

Guess i'll keep changing delivery addresses too.

Sorry - actually meant about 1 time every 5 i.e. 20% of the time I get nailed, probably even less. The other time I got nailed was with poker chips - even though they had quite a small value on them (maybe UD$50) I got charged extra customs by DHL because they were heavy, even though I had already paid through the nose for delivery

The one time you do get nailed will be the time that you make the most expensive purchase online

Doesn't marking gift on the package only insure it for a certain amount if it is lost or damaged, etc?

Have no idea at all - definitely something to look into if you are making a big purchase online...

How long is it since you got the stuff by FedEx? I got a customs bill about 2 months after it was delivered by them. They're very conscientious about applying customs charges !

It hasn't been two months anyway.
    3-4 weeks i guess.
So I stay away from those who ship with fedex too. ;)
