First time doing Judo

    Hi all

Decided to get the old finger out and try my hand at Judo.

Now this will be my first time doing Judo (so I expect to be thrown a lot :) ) - but I am wondering would tracksuit bottoms and a tshirt be enough - or would I need a stronger top for dealing with mutliple grabs, etc.

Better yet - has anyone decent knowledge of what a beginner can expect for their first class?

The club should provide you with judo gi. You should buy one ASAP if you find you like it.

Youll enjoy yourself, itll be fun, challenging and you'll be happily exhausted by the end.

They usually show you a throw. You practice it on a partner willingly. Then you spar throws (maybe not on your first day).

You may train ground separately for safety reasons.

    Its great craic!

    I don't see this happening.
Just turn up and stop asking questions, chicken.

What you do will depend on your club, it will probably be some falling basics, one or two ground techniques & if your lucky some ground work (wrestling on the ground).

as for clothes, it depends on the club. Some do give you a lend of a jacket*, but just in case wear a t-shirt that you wont mind getting ripped.

its a surprising amount of fun. who are you training with?

*edit, my college team did this

I am going to be training with the good people in DIT Kevin Street, looking forward to it.

Have done martial arts before, but was never really into them - so I took a step back and decided what style suited what I always wanted to do - submissions is what I have always like to do (no S & M references please :) )

    Best of Luck with Judu!

The clubs I've dabbled in (and it literally has only been dabbling) have provided me with a gi.

Ph3n0m, will you write up a report of your first training session for boards?

    Thanks,
    Colm
