Did Ireland peak too early ?

There is no denying that the best team won the championship but somewhere late last year it seemed that maybe that could be Ireland.

At the time much was made of the 12-week fitness regime that team had been on. They were fitter, stronger and meaner. It was put forward as a reason the team would cope better. It was heralded as the way forward in terms of preparation.

The effect of it was clear, we beat South Africa, who although they were tired they still had enough talent to potentially win the game. Nonetheless we were excited by the performance and the fire shown in the game.

Argentina brought us down to earth and a workmanlike grinding out was needed to get the result.

Sadly Romania these days only show up for new caps to be handed out.

Since then we've just had relief, a good deal of luck and doses of misery in equal measures. IMO a mere handful of players have performed in any way at all. The excuse that a player "wasn't allowed to play" seems to suggest that they weren't up to it or that their opponent wanted it more. Some of them did seem very tired , short on energy and pretty bereft of ideas.

Did they peak too early or did something else go wrong along the way?
Are we deluded about the "collective" ability of the national team ?
