usually see my brothers check a new hurl by standing it on the ground and bending it - this checks the spring - if it wont bend its not good quality and more likly to break in a clash.

It needs to have a bit of spring in it when bent. Bend it like you see hurlers doing it before a sideline cut. It can also be too flexible but that isn't usually as bad as one that won't bend at all.

Where are you getting it from? If you're getting it from a club then they are generally good hurls. If you are thinking of buying it privately from a sports shop i'd say you shouldn't. From what i've seen the quality of hurls in sports shops are crap. If you are not a member of a club go down to your local one and see can you buy one off them. If it's a relatively big club there shouldn't be a problem.

I got a hurl from Kilmacud a few days ago. I don't think the bendiness of the hurl matters because I had my old hurl for ages and it wasn't bendy but it didn't break for a long time. I think if the grain follows the hurls curve it makes it a better hurl, is this true?

    Yep that's true too.

That is more accurate, that spring thing is a myth. The grain is most important thing. Also if you rub it down with linseed oil it will help.

a nice big Boss is also woth looking for - again you won't get one of these in a shop!!

Get down to Thurles or Kilkenny and go directly to the hurley makers. You will be able to pick out the hurl you want!!

I am pretty sure I got a good hurl. It has a big boss and the grain follows the bend( it's also bendy :) ). Thanks for all the help. By the way my hurls a "Pat Cronin" anyone heard of him?

Or you could just come to Cork to Newtownshandrum and buy an O' Connor's hurley. Sheer class!!! Best you'll find without a doubt. they are really strong and have a large boss which also helps a lot... with soloing! Made by Ben O Connor and his father, Bernie.

What, O' Connor hurleys are mutant??? Why do 90% of the Cork team use them so and also, if they are so bad, why were juvenilles in Cushendall in Antrim using them... They came all the ways to the true home of hurling for them!!

In fairness its a totally personal thing. Defenders like different weight hurleys than corner forwards for example
