Periodic graphics stutter in half-life

So I just formatted my pc because of this problem, hoping years of junk was the cause.

    Reinstalled XP
Reinstalled AVG free, Sygate Firewall, Spybot, lavasoft

Installed Steam, half-life and Natural selection

So thats all thats on my pc. I even defragged it after all had been installed, and changed some settings to performance.

Still every 20 or so seconds, natural selection freezes for a sec, especially when enemies are close, its so frustrating, its like the hard drive is doing something, though its hard to tell cause it lasts so short.

    Any ideas ?

Have you tried this tweak guide for HL2? What specs are your graphic card? What drivers? Are you runing AV while playing game?

You are definitely not alone in experiencing stuttering. This guy made something of a crusade about it at the end of last year. He seems to have stopped updating his webpage - don't know if this is because the problem has finally been solved or if he just gave up.

    Yeah im talking about HL1

    Forgot to give more info..

    System specs:
    Dell inspiron 5150 Laptop
    Intel Pentium 4 mobile 2.8ghz
    Geforce FX Go5200
30Gb Harddrive (unsure about rpm assume its 7200)
    256mb Ram (assume DDR)

When I first got the laptop, all was fine, then after a while it started stuttering, im not sure if it was after I got new graphics drivers.

After the fresh install yesterday I did update my graphics drivers again from the windows update site. And the stuttering was there.

Ive just reformated and installed windows again, im gonna do the security updates from Windows Update, but thats all and see if it was the gfx drivers at fault.

Not sure what drivers Windows Update advises but you should get the latest ones from www.nvidia.com

If I turn up the graphics too high in half-life 2 I get insane amounts of stutter ( every single time any noise is made) even at the default setting I can get it when the computer is stressed, it's annoying like hell  As far as HL1 though I never once had a problem with it, are you certain you are not stressing the computer too much - how about turning down the Gfx settings?
