UPS Shutdown broadcasting

    Anyone have any experience shutting down a few PC's automatically when the UPS indicates it's about to die?

    The network will be composed mainly of Win XP machines with a win 2k pro server. The UPS is a roline one with rs-232 connection back to the 2k rackmount. I've seen the UPS control panel but I can't seem to find anything to b'cast a shutdown to the network - I think it may have something to do with domains rather than workgroups?

    Any ideas?

    eh.. are all the pc's being powered from the UPS as well as the server or something?

    Yeah it's a 3kVa one. according to the spec sheet it'll provide 13A. Enough current for a dvr, a server, 2 tills and some light comms equipment. I hope...

    The rs 232 will be plugged into the server running 2k and it'll be on the same network as all the other ups'd machines. I'm searching ms technet but not having any joy; and they said ms search was better than google!

    http://www.pcmups.com.tw/product/upsmonnetwork.html seems to be what I'm looking for but it seems to be propriety to manufacturer.

    I may continue the epic search..

    There's a few upsd apps on Linux id say there is a similar one for win. Depends on the UPS as well if it dosn't use a standard serial protocol ure stuffed.

    I'm mildly concerned that it may have non standard signalling. I'll find out when it arrives Monday. I'll keep trying to find some non specific sw in the meantime.

    The "PowerChute" program which comes with APC's UPS' is able to do "Network Shutdowns".

    One writes a batch file which it initiates when the loads become critical upon loss of mains.

    I testted my boxes first and timed how long they took to close down. e.g. 2mins.

    When there was 4 mins power left in the UPS (approx) it would execute the batch file.

    Within the batch file I had something like:
    ______________________
    @START c:\winnt\system32\shutdown /s /m \\server1
    @START c:\winnt\system32\shutdown /s /m \\server2
    @START c:\winnt\system32\shutdown /s /m \\server3
    ______________________

    I also used blat http://www.blat.net/ to send a mail to my smtp server which alerted 5 other users of the shutdowns and act accordingly.

    In APC's case the server would not restart when the power returned. This is because XP and 2003 control the ACPI, not the bios.

    It should be a similar principal for Roline...

    in control panel / UPS you should have an option to run a file

    point it at Osmethod's batch file to shutdown the other servers
    you could also use net send to send messages on screen too,
