right my friend has an old computer (bout 4 or 5 years old), doesnt use it much but one day the cd-rom wouldnt open and hasnt since.

i go into my computer and it's not even there! youve got the harddrive, control panel, floppy but no cd-rom! it looks like the cd-rom has been deleted is thats possible.

he doesnt have any driver disks or anything so im sorta clueless as to what to do. i could take it apart i suppose but im hoping theres a simple solution :) it runs windows ME by the way.

    any ideas?

can you see it in the device manager???
i managed to lose my dvdrom/writers the other day during a botched firmware upgrade on one of them the were in the device manager bt "disabled". Managed to reflash them both and both work fine again!

if the drive wont open there could be no power going to the drive anymore, open up the pc and check all the connections to the drive, if still nothing you will have to replace the drive.

If its not something simple like a loose wire
id flash it (as a last resort).
    Drive might be fuxored. :)

yeah its says its working fine in the device manager, come to think of it i didnt notice any leds flashing when i tried to eject it, perhaps it is a power failure. i'll have to check later. thanks for the swift replies folks!
