Here's a brilliant site which i've only discovered tonight.

    speed test

You can check the true speed of your internet connection and averages it out over time.
I'm wondering if any of you lot would mind trying it and posting your results. Just click on "your speed"/"world"/start and see what it comes up with.
I'm with NTL 750Mb/s and this has given results of 320kB/s throughput over 5 runs. Just wondering what the other networks and packages are delivering.

That is so bogus. The files are hosted in the middle of nowhere. Get a real speed test, like http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

I'm 406.8 kilobits per second by that test. That's actually in line with my downloading speeds, and completely different from the 220 the other test gave me.

Tried your one and doubled the speed.Whats the true reading then??
The site i linked to doesn't ask for anything so why would it be bogus - not offended by the way, just curious!!

    750Mb/s? er.....Kbp/s?
    320kB/s=~2.560Mb/s

Many things don't add up here.

Anyway using Cox : 429kB/s (~5Mb/s which is at my theoretical max. but higher than any other benchmark I've tried so I think this test is not too accurate, 'course could be wrong).

    427.3 kilobits per second
    Communications 427.3 kilobits per second
    Storage 52.2 kilobytes per second
    1MB file download 19.6 seconds
    Subjective rating Not bad

This is the nearest speed test closer to home . Its the one that gave me the most accurate results . It calculates the speed in a unusual way.

the test at the top of the page gave me 270 kbps, while 10 minutes ago i was downloading at 460 kbps . Not really a good test as the pc spec is not taken into account.

It just isn't a proper test. Your true speed is probably a bit above the result from my test. Try it at 3 in the morning, and it'll be at it's highest.

168 kbps with the first test, and 426.3 kbps with the second...

    it's all subjective really..

like how long do you gotta wait to connect to a page or how long do you wait for a download!!

like the speed test says your connection is blazing a trail through the net to your computer at amazing speeds , but your download still takes agonising minutes, hours, days
    lol

    anyway for what it's worth.......mine

I find this website to be the best
    http://www.giganews.com/test_connect.html

    I hope you will agree.

Uses realtime and also has a line info test.

These are the results from the second test.
Don't know what to believe now!!!
The reason for testing was because i downloaded Skype tonight and was experiencing some jitter when i called a friend. He suggested i check my connection speed and if these results are true, i can't see why i had a poor signal earlier.

    God bless my work connection.

Off that blacknight server I got
    Your current bandwidth reading is:

    26.97 Mbps

which means you can download at 3.37 MB/sec. from our servers.

    news-europe.giganews.com 6058kbps
    news.giganews.com 4638kbps

These are the test results from an LLU line with Smart Telecom. The profile applied to the line is that of full line speed. This isn't what we're offering right now, but I thought it might be pertinent to post.
