Obtaining a C licence

I was told that all I had to do to get a C licence, was to get a medical from my GP.

    Is it really that easy?

Edit: I notice in the Sticky, that the is no mention of a medical, but a theory test. Any ideas where I could find a copy of this theory test?

Its the same as any other catagory, Theory test to get a provisional and a full driving test for a full license.

    I passed my C test in 1999.

    The procedure is :

    - Theory Test
    - Get Provisional
    - Take driving lessons
    - Take Test
    - Full Licence (if you pass!)
    - Medical Cert required each time you renew
    your full licence.

The Theory Test booklet or CD (I got both;)) are available in Easons or other bookshops.

I reckon it cost me circa. IRL £600 between lessons and test to get C Licence. Haven't actually used it since :D .............. handy to have though !

    Good post :D

I did this only last year, I hear it can be expensive if you're getting lessons privately. So, make sure you PASS first time!

whats does the c license contain? I was recently looking into getting lessons for a fire truck but it costs €70 PER HOUR!

Not exactly sure what you mean by "contain", but a C licence covers ANY size of rigid (i.e non-articulated. non-trailer towing) truck.
You also automatically get C1 (rigid truck up to 7500kg GVW) when you get a C licence.

I plan on taking the EC (artic) test in the future (which will also get me an EB licence. i.e. Car + trailer over 3500kg GVW).

Also a medical cert is needed to get the provisional and Full licences.

Unlike with car driving you cannot just get a provisional C licence and use it for a few years until you can be bothered to do the test. No insurance would cover you and the Guards would do you for it.

The test waiting times for C licences are nothing like car tests, a few weeks is all it takes.

If you obtain a category D (bus) licence are you automatically awarded C as well. I'd assume that you are seeing as a bus would have a d.g.v.w of >7500 kg. Are bus lessons any cheaper/dearer than truck lessons?

    That's interesting BrianD3 ?!

I wasn't aware of that - or I would have taken the D test instead !

Silvera I'm not sure about the buses and the C licence, does anyone here know for sure. From looking at weight information printed on buses/coaches they seem to have a d.g.v.w of around 12 tonnes i.e. definitely over 7500 kg. I would imagine that there aren't many driving schools offering bus lessons so the lessons may be dearer than truck lessons. Also you'd have to make sure to do your test in a manual bus (many buses are autos) otherwise you might get an auto only licence - same story as if you do your B test in an automatic car. Final thing to consider is that a bus would be quite a different driving experience to a truck, one big difference being the much greater front overhang on the bus.

No, the two categories require seperate tests. Although obviously if you can drive one it wouldn't take long to get used to the other. There are some differences in the procedures for each test.

A slightly higher standard of driving is required to pass the bus test as they take into account passenger safety and comfort although how much difference there is in how they mark it I don't know.

I don't think there is a huge diff in price, €150 for two hours is about the rate for bus lessons AFAIR. Although as there are much less places offering bus lessons there isn't much chance of shopping around, I believe only two driving schools in Dublin offer them, and CIE of course.

CIE are automatic only but the driving schools would use manuals, autos are the norm with big operators but small outfits and older coaches still use manual boxes.

    Hi Guys,
So basically the question is HOW MUCH for a C licence ?? I have a full B licence which is not worth a jot if you want to drive something bigger..... How many lesson's before a test is required and how much do you recon it will cost overall before you have the piece of plastic in your hand ..

There is no set number of compulsory lessons and no set syllabus such as EDT, unlike in the car end of it. It's hard to say what it will cost any given individual, but most schools seems to charge around €120 for two hours in a rigid HGV.
