    Hi,
Before I waste an evening trying it, is it possible/practical to play GTR online using a modem ?
I usually get connect speeds around the 48k mark.

What about LFS ? - same answer I guess.

I assume these progs will find a list of server themselves, or do i need to knwo some IP's or addresses to point them to ?

    Cheers.

    Hi Dealgan.
    Firstly,
yeah these sims have their own server lobby.

I was on 56k for 3 years, within these 3 years i played and competed in leagues for Nascar 4 at the time and Grand Prix Legends.
I had very little lag with these games on 56k,these sims are from papyrus and use the legendary papyrus netcode as does Nascar 2003 whuch came out after i gor ISDN.
For 56k id certainly recommend Nascar 2003[its great mods] and GPL.
I havent played LFS on 56k but it was perfect on ISDN.
On ISDN GTR would yield the odd lag free race but since i got broadband i have zero lag in all my games m8.
Id say go for GPL and Nascar 2003 for definite ,id say you have a good chance with LFS also.
Best place to ask would be the RSC [LFS] forums.
    Here you go.
    http://forum.rscnet.org/forumdisplay.php?f=205
Any large patches mods you need just ask in here on boards racing sims :)we have sorted folk out many a time with stuff.
    Best of luck.

    EDIT:
GTR is worth it for offline racing alone.

LFS works remarkably well on a 56k. With less than 10 competitors, its close to perfect.

GTR on the other hand is not so good, it uses the infamous ISI netcode.
Warps, stuck cars, all sorts of rubbish.

As Dcully stated, the papyrus netcode is excellent, and works great on 56k also. If you limit the connection speed of your modem to high 30s, early 40s, it also improves the reliability of the connection(obviously absolute thoroughput is reduced, but the potential for dropped packets is also reduced)

I`ve considered on many occasions that the success in lfs lies in the lower performance of the cars relative to the ISI based games, slower speeds, and especially slower closing speeds means less potential for lag collisions.

    Hope this helps
    Shaun

    Thanks folks.
    I must try LFS tonight.

I think by the time I get the hang of GTR, I'll probably have broadband !
    (wishful thinking)

    Cheers

    Update :
I tried LFS, no running games to join :(

Tried GTR, no running games :(

I was expecting to have to wait for ages while it got a list of running games that were available !

Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my net connection ... It is through a shared intenet connection on a different PC, but the normal email & browsing works ok. I didnt get any pop-up messages from teh windows firewall on either machine (one is win xp prof, one is win xp home) .

    Cheers,
    Declan
    (Disappointed !)

you`ll have to add GTR and LFS manually to the firewall on the other machine, and possibly forward the ports from there.
Although most udp systems should allow outgoing(to race) you`ll most likely find it difficult to host.

Are you all up to date with ur patches, for LFS and GTR?

I'm not sure what you mean here ... add the port numbers ?
I cant add the progs as theyre not installed on the other machine with the modem.

Yeah, I think so. I got the patches from blackhole motorsports for LFS, and I got the GTR (German) patch there as well.. 1.2 from memory ? mabye 1.02 or something.

    Thanks,
    Declan

NOTE:This could be completely wrong, so take with a handfull of salt:
On more advanced firewalls you manually direct the game, but its not important in this case.
Re programs: map a network drive on the host machine to the game(s) and u should be allowed to enable them on the host machine, for the Dial up connection.
Also allow the games on the lan connection firewall for your client machine.

    GTR:
The latest patch is v 1.3, it coincided with the release of the international version, also v 1.3. All the servers online will have been moved to this spec.

    LFS:
The Latest patch is version H

    Update :
I do have version H for LFS.
I tried again, and set firewalls on both machines to log, but cannot see any problems.
I found 2 games only, both private.

I have now downloaded the 1.3 patch for GTR and will try this tonight (if I dont get sidetracked with the Nordschleife track !)

Anything I should know about GTRmanager13final , or is it pretty straightforward ?

    Thanks.

    Update :
I gave up on LFS :(
, but GTR works great on my modem :D
    - usually connected around 46k or 48k.

Only problem I have is that wehn I eventually get to a race start, it looks as if I'm sitting on the bonnet of another car on the grid (cockpit view), and when the race starts all the other cars seem to appear from a few hundred metres behind me, as the pit guy shouts at me to stay behind the other car.
Is there some tweak I need to do to skip the formation laps by default ?

Next question ... are there any specifically good servers I should look out for, bearing in mind my newbie status. (For reference, I am in GTRank as "Declan Grady" , so you can see how bad i really am  )

    Cheers.

the other cars appearing behind you indicates a terrible connection, with bad lags and warps.
This is the position that the other cars were in the last time data was sent to you....they are actually in a very different position, and collisions are inevitable.
I usually just hang way back at the start, and pick cars off one by one. the advantage is that ur data is focusing on the nearest cars, and not being spread thin on a big field.

Dont know anything about servers, gtr online is just to poor.

Possible, but I don't know if I explained it properly .. I suspect its something to do with skipping the formation/warmup lap..
When the race starts, all the cars appear on the grid, (but my cockpit is on the bonnet of another car !). Then, all of a sudden the other cars disappear totally, and then come screaming up behind me, as if they have done the full formation lap, and are doing a rolling start. - this is only 3 or 4 seconds after all have appeared on the grid.

It has happened twice now, on 2 different servers.
Is there some variable in my "player" file that I should be setting to skip the formation lap ?

Normally, in practice, qualifying & even in pre-race warmup the lag is usually fine .. the odd time you will see a car jump around a bit due to lag, but not very often.

Is LFS much better online then ?
Mabye I'd need to have a go at getting that running online. GTR is just too tempting !

btw, when I added the GTR to my firewall exceptions on the client (the games pc) it worked fine through the other pc with the modem.

    Thanks again,
    Cheers.

    Just an update.
I can play GTR online no problems .. just dont see the ping times from the different servers before I join.

Cant get any LFS online at all.

Suspect firewall rules, so any pointers for rules on 2 XP boxes ?

I have searched on rsc forums, but cant find anything of any help.

    Thanks.

Id say any game that does car Ghosting would work fine with 56K. I used to play eracer on line in the old days with car dhosting. Though it then came down to the best lap really.
