I having been trying to burn this movie on to DVD but it said that the file size is too big but the movie is only around 690MB and the DVD disc i'm using is 4.75GB. And the movie is 90mins and the DVD disc said it can hold 120min.

    What am i doing wrong??

I am using Sonic recording for my burning needs
    Any help would be appreciated.

    More detail please :)

What's the file type that you're trying to burn? AVI?

The dvd can obviously hold more than 690 megs but if it's not in native dvd format then it'll need to be converted (and will expand dramatically in size). tmpegenc (I think) might be what you're looking for, but it's a slow process. You might want to consider a vcd instead.

Edit: I'm assuming you want to be able to view this in a dvd player, not just on your computer.

you should convert the avi file to an mpeg file then burn it in dvd format.

How do i convert an avi to a mpeg?

Get your hands on TMPGEnc and use one of the DVD Templates.....'PAL' for 25fps and 'NTSC' for 23/29.97fps. The wizard there will do the video and sound for you. Use Nero then to burn to dvd.

I guess Sonic was reading the avi much longer that it is due to directshow....really it's Microsofts fault as directshow is ****e. I bet it's the MP3 in the original avi giving you probs.

Get the MPEG file made and get back to us. Make sure you have a NTFS partition as the file size will be over 4Gb which FAT can't handle. ;)

burn the avi to nero and use the image recorder on the desktop

when done.open up a tool called iso buster it will bust open the vcd image
open the image and you will see the structure of the vcd.extract the mpegav foler right click and extract the mpeg frames out of it.
once done .you can go to tmpeg and burn it to a dvd from there.
forgive me if i am rubish at explainng.
i do this a lot for the lads. so its 2nd nature i guess
if youre on msn over the weekend ill run you through it
or one of the other guys on here will help you also

The Nero MPEG2 encoding engine is shíte. Your just creating extra steps for yourself. Why bother with the ISObuster step when you can skip it with better results. Your way will work but there are quicker/better alternatives imho.

Ok i'll try that but i'm not great with software.

Somone mentioned trying a VCD process but that gives me the same problem,
Sonic makes the file size too big to burn

I'll see if i can get Nero.
Anyone one if there is a particular version of Nero i should get.

    ur probably right
but as i said thats the way i do my ones. and never had trouble with vcds divx xvids and what not

so my theory is.if its not broke dont fix it.
but if i get the chance id like to get a quicker proggy that does the lot in a few clicks for me

    @Stalfos

    http://www.nero.com/en/nero-prog.php

    Get package 1 for Nero.
Get package 2 if you can too.....Recode can be useful along with the filters it installs.

Can you right click the AVI and post the properities?
    Resolution/bitrate etc.

Well I use Cinema Craft Encoder to encode any Mpeg2 stuff. Probabaly the fastest/best quality software based encoder on the planet. Ain't cheap though. TMPGEnc is free & more user friendly so get that. On a P4 3.06Ghz machine with a 2 hour source it would take just under an hour for DVD using CCE. About half that for VCD as the resolution is half again. There's loads of one click solutions out there but I like doing each step myself and get the best results.
I must get around to doing a guide that way I do it.

Alrite, it's a PAL widescreen setup. Choose "PAL (16:9)" in the TMPGEnc wizard and set the audio to "VBR Mpeg-1 Layer II". Set the "Rate Control" to "2-Pass VBR" and the "Motion Search Precision" to at least 'Normal'. Finally, set the Audio to 192kbits/s. (You can change this for AC3 but that's for another day) The final part of the wizard will calculate the bitrate....just down to you to choose what size (cd/dvdr/custom/etc)
Wait a few hours and you'll have your widescreen MPEG2 file with sound to play with.

It was suggested earlier that you use TMPGenc. A much easier program is: VSO DivXtoDVD. Get it at: http://www.download.com/3000-7970_4-10341695.html

Use that. And use DVDShrink to burn it if Nero causes problems.

Do i need to shrink the file if nero will accept it?

I originally needed to skrink the file because Sonic would say the file was too big

You can use Nero ok if it accepts it but iv heard cases where it stops half way or does something odd!

What was the error TMPGEnc gave you Stalfos?
Why will it not add the file?

Give DivXtoDVD a go if your having probs I guess.
