Dunno much about cats, but I know what you mean... there's a cat that lives in one of the houses behind ours... in the middle of the night it can sometimes be heard screaming (that's the only way I can describe it)... it was particularly bad a few weeks ago... it actually spooked the shít out of me, I didn't know what the hell it was... it sounded like a woman screaming at the top of her voice in terror, yet at the same time it didn't sound human.

Anyhoo, yeah I'm told this is the sound of cats either having it off or wanting to get their rocks off really bad... I'm also curious to know WTF'ing story is with this.
Any cat experts out there? :)

When I lived in Galway there was a cat that used to do that. Sounded like high-pitched screaming. I thought it a baby for a long time until I saw it out on the garden wall one night.

As far as I know it's the way the male cat call's the female to mate. He'll do this for days until she give's in and he'll follow her around until he get's some. This just happens to be the main time of the year to mate for cats.

Cats do this when in heat, contact kitten adoption or cats aid if in Dub area if in another area contact your local cat rescue, they will give you traps to spay/neuter and release any cats roaming around in heat. Kitten season is in full swing and there are too many stray and unwanted kittens as it is.

Everyone needs to help out in their own area, cat rescues can only do so much on their own.

    YUP!

Counted 12 definite strays living in the building site near us.

we tried the trap/alter/release thing last year but twas evidently too late.

the amount of intact feral (and owned alike!) cats allowed outside in built up areas in this city constantly amazes and sickens me.

There's two intact toms who always turn up at our house this time of year even though our two girls are neutered. Seems they still give off the right smells even then. Of course, the neighbours aren't impressed, and I'm sure they're convinced it's our fault.

Trap/neuter/release will only work if it's on going..the first lot of cats you have fixed will still be fertile (ie the males) for a few weeks after their op. So you need to keep TNR for a while, the problem will never be 100% solved until everyone neuters their pet cats (and most Irish owners still won't..at least not in time) but at least this way you can keep on top of the problem and by next kitten season you will find fewer cats in your area.

A bit off topic, but in the "olden days" people used to think that the screaming of cats was a banshee.

The unnatural woman-screaming sound can also be made by female foxes in heat. Freaky, isn't it? Keeps me awake in terror some nights!
