I have a p.c and a laptop that both need formatting.

At the moment the laptop is running windows xp. I bought the laptop from pc world with xp already on it, have license key aswell.

Is it okay to put the windows onto the p.c and run linux on the laptop instead?

It's not ok as far as I know, as the license is for the PC it was purchased with only.

In realitity, most would be using it on about 40 PCs now, good man :)

If XP on the laptop came with a OEM Windows licence then no, you can't (legally) move XP. Only retail Windows XP licences are transferrable. Check your EULA.

You are of course free to install Linux on anything you like. Recent distros will easily install alongside XP in a dual-boot setup.

there's no reason why you can't pysically do it, but I'm not sure what Microsoft would say about you doing it.

might be worth ringing them and asking if you want to keep it legit.

the only thing standing between you and it is the ms activation, but if you're clever you can get around that, unfortunately we're not allowed to tell you how to do that or condone it.

especially condoning it, don't be a bad boy! do what bill gates tell you to or you'll burn in hell. ;)
