Just got a letter yesterday informing me to connect my digiboxes to the same telephone line, i got a same letter last year because i have a second multiroom sub (expires may) which has never been connected to a telephone line, but the sky+ has been constantly connected from day one, but i just had a thought are they sending out these letters to monitor there up coming
up-grades, only im not worring to much because the threatened to cancel my sub last year but never did, we would have a phone connection upstairs but its too much hastle to run a cable up there, i would run it on the surface but got given out to for suggesting it.

Anyway one other thing the installer who i had when i first got sky said i only needed the phone for box office orders.

    That's interesting.

I have a standard Sky sub [ not Sky+ ], I rarely have phone line connected to the digibox and have never received a letter.

My installer also said it need only be connected when ordering stuff, however he did say that if SKY contacted me about it to say that it was just temporarily disconnected [ i.e. the kids plugged it out or that Eircom were carrying out work or whatever ].

    Sparkey's snips:
It is part of the contract for multiroom that both boxes must be connected to the same line. This is how Sky make sure both boxes are under the same roof. It would be interesting to see if they would actually cut you off... As for the upgrades, these are usually/always done via the dish, not the telephone line. So your boxes should still download the latest software when it becomes available.

    eigrod:
Depending on how long ago the installation was done, the installer could have ended out of pocket if he didnt connect line. Sky check installs via callback after a few weeks and if callback failed, Sky clawed back money from the retailers. But I guess he didnt seem too worried about it which is good for you. :)

well i got a letter last year stating they would cut me off but they never did, anyway i can assure them the box is under my roof, has never moved (im sure the dust will prove it). but i know the updates go OTA, but would they not call back to see if it was successfull???

Just before Christmas, I received a letter and then another two months after re: the telephone line connection. I also have the Sky+ connected to the downstairs phone line from day 1 (the original digibox before that).

Originally, I had the box upstairs connected, but I disconnected it when we were doing an attic conversion, and forgot all about it.

In the second letter, I was given 4 weeks to connect up, or I would be charged full price for both subs, or disconnected.
I eventually got a wireless phone connection for upstairs.

A pain, yes but you can see where Sky are coming from.

    :(

I also have multiroom, SKY + on one, and as byte rightly states it's part of the contract that both boxes be connected to the same line. Mine have been, from about 6 weeks after the install (I used a temporary extension lead the day the installer came, before purchasing the plug-in telephone extenders to do the job properly)
Anyway, about this time last year I started getting the same letter Sparky describes - "did you know that your digiboxes are not connected...?" I ignored the first one, then got a more sternly worded one a month later, ignored it again, and after they threatened to disconnect me with a third letter, I got annoyed and rang. (I had tested that they were both connected via System Setup...System Test). Interestingly, the technical department brought me through the Installer menu to check the dialling prefix which had been set by the original installer, and apparently it was wrong. They told me the new one, tried a dial back, and hey presto said that was fine. Never heard another word.
Until last month. Then the postman dropped it through the letterbox!
"Did you know that your digiboxes are not connected...?"
    I'm ignoring it again!

I have just the one box which I pull out the phoneline when thunder is forecast. Often It's left out for some time. I never pulled it out during the first 12 months. I presume this is still OK?

I think its their way of assuring themselves that the boxes are in the subscribers premises, but to keep them happy, you mentioned a plug in telephone extender is this an item that uses the mains wires to transmit telwphone signals, i would be greatly interested in this if there is one done

One invention that sky should market is a wireless telephone transmitter for digiboxes, to save running unsightly muticores on surfaces to digiboxes!

I got sky+ back in october 03 and it worked grand up untill recently when certain recordings would fail, it would stall, your typicial PC type thing, im hoping the new OTA upgrade will sort a few things out but other than some of the problems you could forgive them because i could generally say that life was different after sky+, but the new 160gb version looks cool.

Its mostly uo to yourself, but id say get it.

Yeah, they're far more picky where the person has a mirror sub on a second box. Can't blame them for that - if the person has the full Sky World package on both boxes it's a substantially discounted sub on the second box and they'd like to know the second box isn't miles away from the first in Granny's house.

    Curse their mandatory phone connection.

Have any of you guys tried to operate a dial-up internet connection with the Sky Box plugged in???

I have a Pace box, and I disconnected it from the phone line cause it fecked up my internet connection.

If Sky wanna bully me into keeping the box plugged into the phone line then they can stick their €52.50 p/m sub fee up their...

They want your phoneline connected, to make sure you're not using illicit add ons to give your phone socket in the digibox a plus power supply, and then get frre box office movies to the tune of £50 .

Big brother wants to watch you.

There may be a fault with the digibox modem, as generally, when they're connected to phone, they don't interfere with calls and dialup net access. At least, they shouldn't!

Yes Sparky that's it alright. I bought mine in the local Homeworld DIY store - I think the pair cost me around €110 euro, which is a bit steep but then if it saves you having to run telephone cables across a hallway like me, they are the business.

That's funny. My German aunt wanted full sky, not the crap they got in Germany. Got it installed in my gran's house, we mailed the card to her, she has her own box and bigger dish to pick up the signal. No letters yet...

Surely if one can use one of these wireless extender widgets upstairs then they could just as easily have one next door (i.e. two neighbours taking out a sky sub on the cheap) ?????

I dunno does it use the mains wires or is it done through the air?

Those extenders use the mains supply in your house, so could not be shared with a neighbour. I looked into getting these a while ago, but was put off by the price. I couldn't find them any cheaper than around €100.
