This is a really nice little movie and is quite similar to how we are taking PTKD, while still keeping the TMA aspect.

I agree with what Matt says here, but we just keep the trad base. Everyone should be training with this ethos.

I see no problem with this attitude! The best way to get better at sparring is to spar, no problem there!
I do think the so called "dead" training has a place, hard to throw a total newbie in to a spar and expect him to get better at much more than getting hit. He'll be well conditioned to take strikes but that's not really what most people want to learn :)
I think it's a progression, show the technique slowly so they can see what you are doing and why it works.Next they do the same technique to you, and you let them,so they can learn the "feel" of the move. Now you can start working on doing it on a lightly resisting opponnent ,working up to going full tilt and working it into your sparring skill set.
As he says, this isn't revolutionary to many people. Any one who's read up on Bruce Lee or Dan Inosanto has probably come across "Aliveness" ,as have boxers and Rugby players!
Nice to see it being brought more into the mainstream of training technique.

This is exactly how SBG trains (from my experience anyway)

this is a common misconception amongst people who've never taken a class. 'Aliveness' = 'sparring', that the only way we train is spar all the time, everything full contact.

this is where the I method of Introduce, Isolate and Integrate training comes into place.

An interesting interview with Paul Vunak about the different factions of JKD.

    http://www.fighting.net/interview.php

Paul has a real apporach to the whole JKD thing that looks most like the way Bruce Lee was talking about the concept and not the martial art.

The issue is with "self perfection drills".

It seems like Paul is clinging onto traditional stuff. In time he'll realise the futility!

There's no harm in praticising the traditional stuff. But it's important to keep in mind the difference between an art and a fighting style.

"PFS: In the course of the invention of the Internet and these forums, some people have used them as a method of slander. In your case, some people have brought up alcohol and drugs. Could you please explain to us why on earth you think this is?

(Vunak): Absolutely. Because I did alcohol and drugs. "

    thats pretty damn open alright

yeah Vunak is one of the best martial artists in the world, and a brilliant teacher. I got some of the tapes and they are excellent.

His is very much aimed at street self defense.

No 1 goal is Self Preservation.

No 2 Goal os Self Perfection.

Hes not a trad JKD guy but is a concepts guy.

Actually it is my goal to get over to train with him in 2006 sometime. he's an outstanding trainer.
