Singer, guitarist and songwriter just starting out

I've been playing guitar for a few years, and my voice has come along a lot recently. I'd like to do my own solo projects (in the safety of my bedroom), but I'm also interested in playing with a group.

I write a lot of stuff, but I'm unfortunately ignorant of keys (I am stuck in the land of chords, tabs and individual notes).

My influences include Dave Matthews Band, Radiohead, Tori Amos, Bjork and Air.

Does anyone have any advice on starting out? I really don't have a clue how to proceed.

i'm a million miles away from a guru at this stuff but here's my few cents:

you've taken the first step u have advertised that u want people to join up wit u and hopefully they will. Some samples of your music might be a good incentive. If this ad doesn't get uu a band put up another thousand!!!

be open minded ... try not to think "oh i wanna do this with my songs and thats that".. someone may come along who's into say metal and be able to bring a lot to your band.or some people are sexist and only want blokes in their outfit (wtf's that all about!!!)

set your goal.. if u wanna be giggin in 2 months work at it and achieve it

research your practice area's.. make sure everyone is suited to the practice area u use (eg make sure people with cars have somewhere to park)

most of all enjoy it its a great way to get out and meet people and its the hobby of a life time so just enjoy makin music.. best craic in the world

anyway best of luck with your band hope u get rockin soon :)

I'll be putting some demoes together when I get my laptop and a friends 8-track Motu.

The main reason for doing solo work is that I have complete control over it. I would not expect a similar level of control with a group; besides, collaboration is a great way of encouraging creativity.

I don't know why people don't want women in their band... I love the female voice, and I don't see why a woman would automatically be a worse musician than a man (about half of my musically-inclined friends are women, anyway).

    Thanks for the help man.
