Does anybody know if a hunter who has chosen engineering as a profession is allowed to have/engineer the mechanical dragonling? Would be pretty cool to have both a pet and a mech dragonling at the same time.

I've chosen skinning/leatherworking but I'm thinking of switching to mining/engineering

Yeah, afaik, there is nothing stopping you from having a mechanical dragon as well as your pet. However, a few restrictions:
    Its 200 Engineering
It requires level 30+ for Mechanical Dragonling, 40+ for Mithril Mechanical and 50+ for Arcanite.
You have to buy the recipe from a vendor or AH (check thottbot).
Fused Wiring is incredibly painfully, slow to get. You have to either pay outrageous prices for one, build lots of Advanced target dummys and pray. Or else farm Gnomeregan for them.

Keep in mind that 200 Engineering takes a fairly long time to get to. I'd suggest either keeping skinning/leatherworking till 60 and take up engineering then, or else drop leatherworking and get mining. Level up mining a bit and save as much ore as you can.

Keep in mind that Engineering uses Linen/Wool/Silk/etc and Leather/Medium/etc. so horde them accordingly.

Engineering wont really help you initially, but once it gets going, its great.

You can't have two summoned creatures of any sort so unless you've left your pet in the stable of dismissed it then no mech dragon for you also the universal remote is useless. This is a bit of a pain but is more than made up for by the combination of Feign Death and Goblin Jumper cables.

This allows your group to recover from an instance wipe without having a class that can res itself on death. Something I think is a fairly late on ability anyway. You jump out of FD use the jumper cables on the preist and hey presto everyone is back and thinks yore leet.

If the jumper cables work anyway :)

Engineering is a great profession for any class, the Net-o-Matic is probably one of the best trinkets in the game(even though it has a habit of backfiring at the worst time :P) and some of the bombs are totally insane, Arcane bombs for instance. It gives a nice edge in PvP which not many other professions give. Off the top of my head i think only Blacksmithing for the fear trinket helps as much/more.

    You sure about this?
I've got my main hunter pet and mech squirrel no problems...

AFAIK. I was never able to use the Gnomish Remote while I had a pet for example.

Thats just plain wrong. Yes the remote control is useless, but any summon which is classes as a "guardian" can be out at the same time as your pet. This includes target dummies, dragonlings & harvest reapers.

And yes - engineering rocks for hunters. The guns arnt great, although the next patch will be buffing them somewhat. Its great to be able to carry 4000 rounds of ammunition in 2 bag slots. Netomatic plain rules for pvp. Mind control is funny as hell. And OMG death ray + crit aimed shot = dead horde :).

As other people have said, it is a pain lvling engineering. If i was you i'd go skinning and mining until you reach lvl 40. Sell it all off on AH, you will be rich. Once you have your mount and some decent eq, then its time to drop skinning and grind up engineering.

Cool. I never actually made a dragonling I just figured it would be controllable rather than a guardian. Nice one.

thats ace that you can have both a pet and a mech dragonling. The one thing that was bugging me was that I play as a Tauren hunter and I couldn't find an engineering trainer anywhere in Mulgore or Thunder Bluff when I started out. But eventually I found one in the Venture Co. Mine. The only dilemma I had was that the quest involved killing the engineering trainer (it's the Supervisor Fizsprocket quest). If I nail him can I still get engineering schematics from him when he resapwns when I need to get to next level of engineering?

You'll need to run to Orgrimmar soon enough. I wouldn't worry about offing him.
