Help me! :( Disillusioned masters IT graduate looking for paid work in the charity industy in Ireland ie, Concern, Goal etc... (want to do something worthwhile instead of selling my soul to some commercial company but still want to put the IT skills I've learned to good use.)

anyone with experience of this type of thing?

    Any advice appreciated!

Sorry but isn't your post sort of giving the wrong idea. You don't want to sell your sole to a large commercial company, want to work for charity but get paid?:D

Try sending an application into them

Maybe go onto their websites and check out the "Jobs" or "Vacancies" links?

Alot of people do it you know! Its the difference between working for a worthwhile organisation that allows you to live on a modest wage in order to be able to work for them.....as opposed to working for a purely money making organisation.

Have checked some of their websites but they seem to mostly advertise jobs internally. I just wanted to see if anyone out there had experience of this kind of thing before I startied searching in earnest.

What sort of experience have you?
What living wage are you looking for?
    Where are you based?

I am currently writing a couple of software applications for a Dublin based charity. They _might_ be interested in having someone to maintain/upgrade/train on them.

Working for a multinational/commercial company isn't exactly 'selling your soul' as you put it (unless you have communist tendancies ;) )... There are a lot of good employers out there if you are willing to go an find them who treat their employees well..

Just because the end result is you making money for the company, isn't exactly that much of a soul selling scenario.

If you want to work directly with charities and that type of field, the only way to find out is by applying to them...

With the I.T. industry you're going to have to work for a commercial outfit at some stage in order to gain the experience that you need. After that, then you can decide to work with charities etc when you actually have something worthwhile to offer them that will make a difference...

Good luck with your search, but in my own opinion, i think you are limiting your options by only looking at charity employers...

Have a look at the volunteer forum

Due to nature of the "Business" it would probably best to do some voluntary work for them, kinda like an on the job interview to see if yez are mutually compatible
