    Hi Folks,

Can anyone tell me if SAP (second audio program) is supported in Ireland? If not, how are alternate audio tracks handled?

    Not familiar with SAP?

SAP is “second audio program.” In consumer TV menus, there is usually a selection for sound that includes stereo, mono, and SAP. The SAP is used to carry a second audio track—usually another language track. In the US, this is largely used for Spanish audio.

The US and Japan uses a subcarrier based system (somewhat similar to that used in FM radio) to transmit stereo, additional languages, audio description for blind/partially sighted people and other stuff with analouge TV programmes

In most Western European countries (Including Ireland and the UK) a digital system known as "NICAM 728" is used. Although mainly intended to enable stereo sound there is provision in the system for additional low-fi audio channels for the aforementioned audio description and alternate language services

Im not sure whether these facilities are used in Ireland though (might be an idea for TG4 :D )
