16 year Old with no experience

I've been looking for a summer and/or part time job recently but have found it very hard as people want you to have experience. I cant actually get experience without having a job so this is a Catch 22 situation.

    Any tips?
    Jobs that don't require experience/references?

what sort of job you looking for....? Are you a particularly young looking 16 coz that can sometimes be a hinderance...

  • yep quite young looking, any jobs at all. I've got a slight background in office work, but only unnoficially, I'd have no problem working retail or being stuck behind a desk all day, money's money.

    supermarket

  • couple of supermarkets near me, one problem is that during term time i can only work restricted hours, and none of the three were willing to accomodate that.

where about you based? i know of work as a Guest house receptionist/porter in Dublin 2. Not sure what the owner is looking for and the money isn't the best but if you are interested, i could talk to him and see if he might interview you....

Well...i'm not sure those hours would suit the guest house.....but i'll put a word in and see what the owner reckons....you can have a gander at the place at www.number31.ie :)

  • thanks ruggie, no harm to ask what he thinks.

Dunnes/Roches Stores, I know are accomodating for younger people.. you could get hooked up with weekend shift positions.. 9-5 saturday/sunday is ideal. It wouldnt be so bad to travel, would it?

burger king/mcdonalds/pizza hut/chip shop will all cater for students, especially BK/McDonalds..

  • well i'd like to see if Ruggie can sort me out there first, would much prefer to work in a less public place than a shop/restaurant, but if it's the only job availible i will take it.

Does anyone employ under 18 year olds these days?

I know I got a pt job when I was 15 (10 years ago), but my brother and his mates (15/16) can't find anywhere that will take them.

  • Cheers Ruggie, i'm grateful for any help.

Retail stores like Dunnes or Penneys always take on young inexperienced people

Summer job in EBS Tech support at 16 right here!

Dunnes wanted me to work while I'd actually be in school, and McDonalds offered me a job, but I had already got the EBS one.

  • EBS got any other spaces?

whats the pay and hours like?

Pay good, hours great, no way you'll get in though. It was by fluke for me, and I've already been asked to come back. McDonalds is a good start.

I worked in dunnes when I was 16 (that was nearly 7 years ago though). They were fairly accommodating with the whole school thing. Money was great for a 16 year old too.

I feel your pain. I myself am in the same predicament and am begining to find people's un-willingness to give me a chance a bit frustrating. I'd recemend checking out the notice boards in local corner shops and supermarkets as they can sometimes be of help. Good luck to ya, and you never know you might get lucky.

I worked in a Supervalu when I was 16 and was on 3 pounds an hour. At the time it was great..

I'm sure all supermarkets still take in students.
