Laptop is a HP Compaq NX7000

    The story:

Have memory that can be put into the machine, so I screwd off the back section to see if I could put it in, but it is filled up so I couldn't insert it. So I screwed it back again and tried to start it up but I am getting a "clocking" sound from the DVD/CD rom drive and the machine won't boot up. The lights are coming on, but the screen isn't coming on and the contstant clocking noise keeps happening.

Am I fecked here? Would anyone have an idea on what to do. Im not technical and don't really have a clue of what to do.

Would really appreciate any help?:confused:

you may have touched the motherboard and fried it with a static discharge. is it under warranty?

Do I need to bring this to someone to get it repaired.

Anyone have an idea of cost involved/seriousness?

    Help!

Don't be scared now you might have just unplugged the HD or something simple like that - can you get into bios and see if the drives are showing up> Also take the cover off again and just make sure everything is in place!

Im in work and haven't got it with me, but will see what I can do when I get home this evening.

Can you explaining simply on what I do next from:

-I press the power on button, clocking noise from the cd rom happens
-all the lights on the laptop come on
-nothing on screen - can't see nothing

How do I get into the Bios from there.

If anyone could do a simple step by step I would be delighted.....please

This is hopefully not the case. It's my experience that frying something with static discharge from your hands is pretty tough. I've never managed to do it, and lord knows I've tried ;)

Maxwell: Can you give a bit more detail...In particular, is the screen coming on at all? Does the bios screen come up?

Try disconnecting all power sources for a minute, then reconnect and try another boot. Does the hard drive power up? Is there a disc in your cdrom drive? Is the drive removeable? What happens when you remove it?

Apologies for all the questions.....just trying to diagnose.

if theres nothing on screen you may be fooked.
open the cd drive to disable it when booting to see if its looking for soemthing in the drive.

any beeps from the laptop to suggest its loading?
do you ahve a vga out on the back, hook it up to monitor to see fi the screen is frazzled.

again check all connections etc inside,

Yeah, it's quite likely you may have disconnected something by accident, or knocked something out of place. First of all, you'll need to answer Khannie's questions. Whether you've fried it or not depends. I've done it once or twice, but then I can get quite staticy at times.

    Thanks All,

Maxwell: Can you give a bit more detail...In particular, is the screen coming on at all? Does the bios screen come up?
Screen is not coming on at all - and no bios screen

Try disconnecting all power sources for a minute, then reconnect and try another boot. Does the hard drive power up? Is there a disc in your cdrom drive? Is the drive removeable? What happens when you remove it?

Will do this when I get home. There is nothing in the rom drive, the drive needs to be screwed off and not just push our removable, but will check it when I get home.

Thanks for all your help! Seriously worried that I have knackered this machine and don't want to be hit with big money on repairing it.

Thanks again, will post again this evening when I have given all your advice a go.

    Maxwell,

OK, The laptop was perfect. You removed the back plate to access the RAM. You put the back plate back on and it doesnt work.

Sounds to me like you may have fried one of the memory mods, you said you had memory you where going to install. heres what to do.

    (((Ground yourself)))

    1. Remove the back plate --> remove one of the memory mods (Try booting now)

    2. Do the same as 1 but with the other memory mod. (Try booting now)

    3. If 1 & 2 dont work --> Remove all memory --> insert the new memory you where going to install --> Boot the system.

Please let me know is this works.

Thanks Joe, I will try that.

I can't bring the laptop to work so therefore I can do it until I get home.

    Fingers crossed now everyone!!

Thanks for all the help up to now

    Thanks Joe PC,

I did what you said and found out that the old memory chip has been fried as it won't work. When I take it out, the machine boots up perfectly.

Ah well, ruined the memory but at least that can be replaced. Worries now over.

Thanks to all who helped out and commented aswell!!!!
