Buying new bass amp

    Hello All.

Im not really deathfunk, but his friend. Im gonna buy a new amp and have only the faintest idea where to start. I get completely lost when reading technical jargon and was wondering if someone could advise me based on what Im looking for.

You see, in English, I want something with a nice punchy/funky sound. I tend to have the bass and treble turned up a lot but dont always get the dynamic of the 2 (ie playing in lower frequencies and getting both volume and punch so that notes will ring out a bit longer when I need them to).

I know I dont like Trace Elliot and Im not crazy about Ashdown. I have played on an Ampeg when supporting another group and it was pretty cool. But I dont just want to buy one based on that one experience.

Im gonna go for a seperate amp and cabinet and I know you can make different combinations between brands, but god knows where to start. Also, something thats going to wear the test of time because I'll be spending what I consider to be a lot of cash on it. Please speak from personal experience.

So with or without the technical hoo-ha (if you decide to use technical jargon, please explain in english what you mean) please give us your respective 2 cents.

If you didnt like trace or ashdown, the speaker size probably had a lot to do with it. For a nice punchy/funky sound your best bet is to gat a 4x10" cab and a good high powered amp (at least a couple of hundred watts) for lots of headroom (ie no distortion at high volume).

Go into musicmaker/musician inc. or wherever and try out every amp head with every cab. Then when you decide what you like go and buy it on the net.

and im an ashdown user and i love the tone form my 15" speaker. but each to his own as they say

    Cheers dudes.

I guess I haven't tried much out. Do you reckon that if i decide on something in musician/waltons/musicmaker I should buy it on the web?

I heard Thomann is pretty good.

I think I will go seperate with the amp and cab. I suppose there are transport issues with them but feck it. Why not go all out!!

yeah definitely buy online all the music shops in town are a rip off. thing is ya cant try Gallien Kruegers in town. Suppose you next best bet would be Ampeg in Waltons.
