    Hi,

I am living in Co.Galway and have been waiting for some sort of broadband to come to my (very rural) area for some time to no avail.

My local exchange (Turloughmore), which is basically a small hut, is not broadband enabled and I am doubting that it will ever be. Many of the other surrounding exchanges either have been upgraded or will be this year.

I heard something a while back about Wireless Broadband being set up in Galway but have not seen anything of it.

    Any suggestions?

    Many Thanks
    Jason

NTL are working on BB over that part of the Island. I've no idea of timescale\availability.

Turlougmore is well beyond the 3.5Ghz service areas but Ballyglunin and Claregalway will get DSL ths year so you need to extend one out to you using wifi kit

    Thanks for the info, guys.

What a shame, the Ballyglunin exchange is actually nearer to me than the Turloughmore one which we are connected to. The house behind us is connected to the Ballyglunin exchange but we are the first set of houses to be connected to Turloughmore. Just missed out...

How does this Wifi thing work? The Irishwan website still seems to be down.

    Best Regards
    Jason

    Hi Jason,

You get someone (or do it yourself) to do a wifi scan to see what nodes you can detect.

Then buy relay wifi gear, and grow the network in your area.

    There's more info here : http://www.skynet.ie/~stephen/wireless/faqs.html

The website is likely to be down for a while....the forums & IRC channels are where the real communication happen to be honest.

    regards,
    Dave

You should get in touch with zed, he's the official rooftop artist for co. Galway. See this post.
If you send him an email or PM, he'll answer.

    cheers,
