I've seen quiet a few young Eastern-European kids out and about in the city center by themselves at night. Last night I saw two of them trying to buy alcohol in an off-licence. Wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this and could it be a bigger concern in the future?

God, I hate going to the off licence on a friday or saturday evening. Accosted on all sides by shifty looking teens.

I'm still 17 and got asked for ID when I was buying a litre of vodka yesterday. Showed my (really badly DIY done) fake ID and sorted. And I mean REALLY BADLY DONE.

    Ooooh absolutely shocking!

Have you had your head buried in the sand for the past number of years. Kids aged 15-16 have been getting served in off-licenses for years. It doesn't shock me anymore.

    i was just thinking that!!!

eastern european kids drink from about 12 at home, and there's no real alcohol laws in europe. legal age is 16 in most countries, even england (but only for beer or cider, but its better than here!) so it wouldnt be unusual for them to look for alcohol, we're just backwards about our alcohol laws.

And France doesn't have a problem with underage drinking, because that fosters a healthy attitude to alcohol..

As far as ive seen they dont have much problems in the house at all, kids are taught to respect alcohol in that way whereas over here its just a gulp 'n' go kinda thing... and wine for the kids builds up a healthy resistence to it too.

Ps. Also in France outside of major population centres there is basically no night life

French students were in the house I was in, down in Carlow. Party = some music & as much drink as possible. They love the pubs and nightclubs. Seemingly its waaaay better than France.

Yes a wave of Eastern European children are going to come and take the place of Irish born children buying drink in offlicenses....you know what its just easier to call you stupid. And what really annoys me is that it was easier to buy drink when I was 15, than it is now i'm only a few months from being 18.

yeh i found that too simi, it was harder to get served just before 18 than any other time.

what i've found now is that now i'm 18 they don't look for id anymore, i just wanna shove it their face from the looks they give me

It wasn't a crypto xenophobic remark. Just as Irish people made a life for themselves for god knows how long in the UK, I support extending that same opportunity to Eastern Europeans and equally I am opposed to the constructive deportation of Irish born citizens.

Its just that over the past few months I've noticed quiet a few Eastern European children of school going age on the streets during school hours and late at night (Its been mentioned to me by several people as well).

The reason I mentioned that they were Eastern European is that most of these children, unlike Irish children, have little or no English. So any exclusion from the education system is compounded. Are measures in place to teach these children English and integrate them into our education system? Or are we going to have a Keelin Shanley hand-wringing piece on Prime Time 18 months from now on how X (hundred/thousand ?) children have fallen between our education system and their native education systems?
