Ummm have you tried ripping the CD to MP3s with summat like Exact Audio Copy, CDex or even Windows Media Player? Then transfer the resultant MP3s onto the device.

Most players come with software for this very purpose... but I never had an iRiver.

plug it in using the USB cable, it'll appear as a drive in my computer. Now drag & drop your ripped mp3s,wma's,ogg's, wavs, midis or whatever else you want to listen to onto it. Thats about it.

They'll need to be mp3s or oggs or whatever first. You'll need to rip the music from the CD. Here's a recent thread on that.

I put my cds on my hard disk and then transfer the WMA files using the drag and drop system.

    Hope this helps,
    ciao for now

looks to me like a simple case of not ripping the disks first.

The software i used to rip the cd, which was winamp, wont let me drag and drop the files onto the iriver drive.

Once i have the CD ripped, then what, i cant drag and drop and it wont save when i click Save playlist. theres got to be a way

The files arent in the hard drive, thier just in the library of winamp, after ripping, and i cant get them onto the iRiver at all

of course they are on your hard drive. winamp has to play them from somewhere. I dont use winamp myself but do a search for *.mp3 with your windows find utility and it should tell you the location.

In my own personal experience, windows media player is the easiest ripping tool to use for inexperienced users.

When you find the mp3 files, use your windows explorer/my computer and copy and paste them to the iriver drive. simple.

winamp is the software that the manual tells you to download, but it doesnt seem to be helping. i dont know if theres any other to save files on the iriver, theres got to be.

i use music match it ripps the cd's to mp3's which i copy over to the iriver

They're probably not ripped, the last time I looked you had to buy winamp to be able to rip with it, if they are ripped a simple search for one of the song names will find them.

same here.. musicmatch also. its a bit of a pain in the ass sometimes but seems to work fairly well. All my stuff rips into a folder called "mp3's" and I just drag & drop the files from there onto my iriver.

look.. forget about winamp. Iriver supports its playlists, but you dont need them.

I have the H120 and i just use a 'traditional folder system' on mine. Best way i reckon.

The way i do it is...

Use windows media player to rip the cd. It converts it to either WMA or MP3. You can change the settings in windows media player options.

Media Player rips the cd to your 'My Music' folder in 'My Documents'.

Copy the resulting folder from 'My Music' to your Iriver drive using copy and paste.

I will explain the 'traditional file system' that i use:

Basically you dont need playlists on the iriver. If you give each artist a folder and put the albums of that artist in the artists folder, I find this the easiest way.

Now each MP3 filename when ripped with windows media player usually starts with the track number, e.g. 01 - blablabla.mp3

If you use this format 01, 02, 03, 04 etc etc, the files will play in order.

Ensure that you include the 0 for the track numbers from 01 to 09.

If not and you have more than 9 tracks the files will play in the following order

    1
    10
    11
    12
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6
    7
    8
    9

    etc etc

if you include the 0 they will play

    01
    02
    03
    04
    05
    06
    07
    08
    09
    10
    11
    12
    etc

Look in 'My Documents/My Music' folder for the mp3's. If winamp is playing the music it's on your harddrive somewhere.

OK this is getting ridiculas, i,ve successfully ripped a couple of cds with windows player, and copied and pasted them onto my iriver, they go on alright but when i go to play them back nothing happens. the somg names scroll across the screen but no sound al all, their wma files by the way but i dont think that makes a difference. someone has to know how to solve the problem.

their wma files by the way but i dont think that makes a difference.
Oh indeed and it could. You may have left the little tick box that enables copy protection on every wma file you've created (in WMP9 it's under Tools, Options, Copy Music tab, "copy protect music" tick box) which means your iRiver won't be able to play them.
