Help! PSU dead ?

Hi...I was in the process of assembling a new small form factor PC with a new Antec Aria case which has a 300W PSU. First, I installed the new mobo with a 3Ghz P4 (LGA775), 512MB RAM leaving all the expansion slots free (mobo has integrated graphics). I tested at this stage and the machine booted fine. Then I removed the drive cage and installed a working NEC DVD writer and a new 80GB drive. The machine booted fine again but went dead after about 1 minute while I had the H/W monitor running in the BIOS. The CPU temp was about 49-50C at this stage. Thinking maybe the motherboard was shorting out against the case, I removed it, wiring it up outside of the case and tried booting again - but no luck. I then tried the mobo with a different PSU and it booted fine. So it leads me to believe the PSU has packed in. Strange thing is there was no popping noise, nor any smell of smoke from it, and I'm quite sure a decent 300W PSU can handle the components I mentioned above. Any ideas/suggestions welcome before I RMA it. Thanks in advance....

What make of PSU did it have?

It was an Antec PSU, so should be pretty decent quality I guess.

300W should be enough (unless you go and throw in a fancy graphics card of course) and antec are supposed to be a pretty good make, but nobodys infallible I suppose. The fact you have a "working NEC DVD" and another psu to test the mobo with makes me wonder if you have another machine you can try the PSU on ?

Yes, I have another P4 system, but the PSU can't be moved too far from the Antec case as it has proprietary connectors that must hook into the chassis. I really don't want to strip down my other machine to get the mobo out if I can help it!

It would be hassle alright, if the cables are long enough on the psu you might be able to sit both machines beside each other with the PSU between them and it's connectors in the antec case and power cables running to the mobo in the other box. I suppose you have to weigh up the hassle of doing something like that with the hassle of sending back a PSU which may not be dead (altough it does seem like it is) and then having to wait for it to come back and trace down the real problem.
