    Hi,

I've downloaded some bit torrent stuff in avi format recently. I can generally get them to play using VLC, but can't get it to work on QuickTime Player 6.5.2 Pro. Anyone know why? Is there another QuickTime component I can download somewhere to make it play .avi files?

    Confused.

I can't be certian but the avi might be in divx format, and if you download the appropriate codec from Divx.com it should work.

In my experience, VLC plays compressed video smoother than QT plus it can go into full screen mode which is nice.

Hope that is of some help

yep, thanks that worked for QuickTime.

So does VLC have a built-in divx decoder or something?

yes vlc has it built in, dont download anything from divx.com as they are sellouts and most likely bundle some spyware.

Xvid is a good alternative though

Spyware? Would that not be hampered by having firewall switched on? And/or NAT on a router?

Yeah I was kinda thinking that Macs can't really get harmful spyware... I downloaded and used the divx.com stuff without any problems. I'd keep away from their windows products fair enough

I've recently changed all my file associations to VLC, QT struggles with a lot of files. I find that running .avi files through DivX Doctor II will fix most problems though, and have converted all of my West Wing eps to sound-synced .movs.
