ID3 Tag renamer

    Hi,
I am looking for a tool that will sort out the ID3 tags of some albums belonging to a friend, to put on her iPod for her.

I did a CDDB search on Exact Audio Copy and then ripped the tracks, when I put them on the iPod some had Unknown Artist, Unknown Title. However, they were all named properly as files. Just not ID3.

So if I had an albums in the following destination:

    Music/Artist/Album/01 - Track 1.mp3

    say for example:

    Music/Snow Patrol/Final Straw/01 - How To Be Dead.mp3

How can I rename all the ID3 tags so they will read
    Artist-Snow Patrol
    Album-Final Straw
Track 1 - 01 How To Be Dead

Also, what if I have for example

Music/Various Artists/Best Tracks From the Best Movies/CD2/01 - Smashing Pumpkins - The End is the beginning is the end (Batman Forever)

How Would I do the ID3 so it will do it like that?

Basically, I just want the ID3 tags to relate to the folders the file is in.

    Thanks!

Tag&Rename is quite good. 30 day free trial.

    PZ-TagEditor isn't bad either.

You can do what you want in both these programs - eg. set it up to get <artist>/<album>/<track number> - <track title>.mp3

    Thanks for that :)
Do you know of any that will do it for free? (no expiry dates etc)

PZ-Tag Editor doesn't expire. But Tag&Rename is better I think.

I found the interface nicer and easier to use. But I think both programs do the same basic thing.

And I'm sure it won't take you more than 30 days to tag your files.

The Godfather (tgf) is an excellent mp3 (and other major formats) file and tag renamer. Daft name but it works and it's free... :)

I swear by TagScanner. Once you spend 5 minutes figuring it out (its not the most intuitive), you'll find that it is very powerful. Free too. :)

:) yea, there are a lot of them out there.

They're not very big downloads and each have there own nice features. Just download a few and see which one you want to use. Finding the one you like makes a difference when your MP3 collection is big enough.

Hmmm, I've tried one or two of the above mentioned.

I'm looking to do this though,

    If I have for example

(Level1)Music/(Level2)Albums/(Level3)Smashing Pumpkins/(Level4)Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness/(Level5)CD 1 - Dawn To Dusk/(Level6)01 - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

I only have the ID3 options of Artist/Album/Title/Track Number

So I would need to have

    Artist: Smashing Pumpkins
Album: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - CD1 - Dawn To Dusk
Title: 01 - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
    Track Number: 01

So I need to combine Level 4 with Level 5. Is this possible or will I need to let there only be 5 levels in my folder layout altogether and have it like:
(Level1)Music/(Level2)Albums/(Level3)Smashing Pumpkins/(Level4)Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, CD 1 - Dawn To Dusk/(Level5)01 - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

so that the ID3 process will be the same for all files? Because there are only 6 levels on a small percentage of my albums, the likes of:

    (Level1)Music/(Level2)Albums/(Level3)Leonard Cohen/(Level4)Dear Heather/(Level5) 01 - Go No More A Roving

only has 5 levels and this is the dominant way for most albums.

    Thanks!!!

    I use ID3-TagIT myself.

But remember if it's a bit of simple tagging you need to do, windows xp allows you to do it natively. Just select all the mp3s in the directory, right click on properties and then click the summary tab. You can change the values for artist / album etc for all the files in one go.
