Get one of the 6600GTs. The 9800 Pro is old hat compared to them. It's ATI's old generation of graphics cards - they don't even make them any more!

I have an AMD 3000+ with 512mb RAM with a 9800 pro 128 and it struggles to run HL2. This could be down to the ran being two slow 256 cards or my sound drivers being messed up. Don't have the time to fiddle with it at the moment to try and sort it out.

I presume it would be better to get the slightly more expensive of the 2 6600's?

Try getting another 512mb of ram. HL2 eats ram, you really do need a gig. Windows xp can eat 200mb's or more alone leaving you with only 300-350mb's for the game.

Yea m8, definately go with the Gainward GeForce 6600GT (haven't heard of the other manufacturer), & i think the 6600 definately kicks the ATI out da park!

    head to head comparison:

It is. I wouldn't buy it new for anywhere near that money. If I were you I would either:

    1. Keep nearly half my budget and buy a second hand 9800pro or 9800xt - performance roughly on a par with a 6600GT

    2. Up my budget a fraction and buy a 6800LE en enable all 16 pipelines. Worth it for Doom3 :D

Theres no more budget to be upped lol, every time i ask a question on here you guys make me spend more money your all evil!!!
Id just like to add i love you all

Is this what you want me to buy unkel? :D

Yeah I think you're right, I can run doom 3 on fairly high settings fine and fry cry as well. Its when I get to the buggy levels in particular that it just rolls over and dies. But it doesn't slow down on frame rates at all what's happening is the next level will fail to load so I'll ram into a solid wall which is suppose to be where the next mini map is loaded up and then all the menus crash and I have to reboot and try again. Don't have the time to play the game nor the money to invest in new ram at the moment so I'll leave it till summer or later, I'll get a better deal on ram then anyway.

I just bought a 6600GT OC by BFG off a mate of mine

Its much faster than my previous 9800xt and its far more future proof as well with all those extra options that come with it

    PLUS

It over clocks really well wiuth stock cooling up to 580MHz and 1.17GHz Ram and its still covered by warranty

    a true 5 star card

Ive decided on getting this card, but i need something clarified, will i need an adapter to plug this into my monitor or will it be a standard connection?
    edit/
It also states in the specs that it requires a 350 watt psu, i have a good 350 watt psu asfaik, this one, will this be enough?

You will need no adapter to plug that Gfs card into your monitor. It has the older and more modern connections.

That PSU should be fine. Just make sure its on a cable of its own, not daisey chained from a HDD/DVD etc.

I wasnt aware a gfx card could be plugged into the psu directly

Will this 6800 require an adapter to use with a standard CRT monitor?
