Carding Grants 2005

    The 2005 Carding Grants were announced today by the Irish Sports Council. For those who don't know, these are grants given by the ISC to athletes who display talent at an international level to support their efforts to bring home medals for Ireland. The grants are given at set levels; World Class 1 (up to €30,500), World Class 2 (up to €22,900), World Class 3 (up to €19,100), International (up to €11,500), Developmental (up to €4,600) and Junior (up to €1,600). There are also grants given to Junior squads this year.

    So we have four shooting grants this year, not as high as in past years alas, but we've seen people moving from junior to senior grades so that was to be expected; congratulations to Nick Flood and Derek Burnett on their World Class 2 grants, David Malone on his International level grant, and to the ICPSA for the Junior Squad carding grant.

    For those interested, the criteria for these grants are

    and some general details about applying for them and so on are here. For shooting, there are two sets of criteria - one for shotgun shooters and one for rifle and pistol shooters, following the division of management in shooting in Ireland.

    For clay pigeon:
    World Class 1

    Top 3 in the World Championships
    Top 3 in the Olympic Games
    World Class 2
    4-6 in the World Championships
    Top 6 in the Olympic Games
    European Champion
    World Class 3
    9-12 in the World Championships
    Medalist in two World Cup events in two years
    Qualification for the Olympic Games
    Medalist in the European Championships
    International
    Top 6 in two World Cup events in two years
    4-12 in the European Championships
    Top 20 in the World Championships
    Developmental
    Top 30 in two World Cup events in two years and under 23
    Medalist in the European Junior Championships and no longer eligible for that event
    Junior (under 21)
    Top 20 in the European Junior Championships


    For rifle and pistol:
    World Class 1

    Top 3 in the World Championships or Olympic Games
    Top 1 in the World Championships (non-Olympic events)
    World Class 2
    4-8 in the World Championships or Olympic Games
    Top 3 in the World Championships (non-Olympic events)
    European Champion (Olympic events)
    World Cup Winner (twice) in two seasons
    World Class 3
    9-16 in the World Championships or Olympic Games
    4-8 in the World Championships (non-Olympic events)
    Top 3 in the European Championships (Olympic events)
    European Champion (non-Olympic events)
    Top 3 in the World Cup
    International
    17-50 in the World Championships
    9-30 in the World Championships (non-Olympic events)
    Top 4-16 in the European Championships
    Two top 8 finish in the World Cup series in two seasons
    Developmental
    Achieve an Olympic qualifying score and be in the top 30 twice in World Cup series or European Championships
    Junior
    Achieve an Olympic qualifying score and under 21 years of age (Junior category in I.S.S.F.)
