OK , I want to put up a server to run a Half-Life mod. What do I need? I have the specs ( 700MHZ , ISDN , 128 ram. Is that enough?) and obviously the game itself. What else do I need? Am I missing any vital components. I suppose I need a rather large domain but then I am totally new to this and have no idea what I need. Anyone that can help?

if you want more than a couple of players you're going to need a hell of a lot more than an ISDN line. Game servers chew up a lot of bandwidth. Also, you might want to install Windows NT or Linux on that machine to run the server from.

I'd imagine the ign machines would be multiprocessor, scsi hard drvies, ram falling out of their arses.. smile.gif

naw, the most important part really is the connection, without a good connection, u got nothin ! ISDN won't cut it. u'll neead at least a 512 or 1 mbit line.. at least...

expensive.... unless u gotta lota money to burn theres not really much point i setting up your own server...

my thoughts on the matter wnyways..

Well the machine doesnt have to be super l33t, its really down to the connection as Verb says, you need to get a lease line, which can cost up to £3000 quid a year. frown.gif

We have 10mbit connections with mediocre machines (decent ram in most tho).

The IOL games machine (games1) is a monster with duel cpus raid failover HD's indecent amounts of RAM etc on the IOL backbone with a definite 10MBit connection.

Something similar would cost you 3-4K for connection with about the same again for the server.
And then you have to deal with the muppets and the abuse smile.gif

    Wait a second.. i'm talking out my **** ..
that is of course a hosted machine.. not a leased line to ur location.. jeese my brain is rapidly turning to a gooey pasty mush.. ( bit like squished peas really ! )

/me has access to a dual 550, 1Gb Ram, and a 90 Gb Fibre raid system. If I got a lease line, I could probally set up a server at night when the computer wasnt being used etc
