Now's your chance to give input....

For the "where can I buy" thread, I have extracted all the websites to a list. My intention is to put them together in one categorised list (a bit like the software thread) and lock and sticky the new thread, unstickying, but leaving the old one (with a link to it in the new thread).

    Categories will be (for example)

    Brick and Mortar stores

.ie and other Irish online stores

    .co.uk online stores

European online stores that deliver to ireland.

US online stores that deliver to Ireland.

Anyone have any other suggestions for the other threads? Or that one?

Most importantly, I want to reduce the number of stickies and reduce the clutter in them. I've cleared this with the other mods, so it's going to happen. :)

how about a stickie on dvd related questions

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,488 ✭✭✭SantaHoe

IMO stickies that are any more than 2 pages long and cluttered with mostly fluff, are a pain to read... ditto stickies with out-of-date info.
Also too many stickies is annoying.
Glad to see someone's taking the time out to keep the place tidy.

As for the list, I'd say maybe have a generic Top-5 category based on popularity (the usual suspects like komplett and overclockers.co.uk etc)
Maybe have a user-feedback rating for each site, although I'd imagine you'd have to start a number of polls to get this figure nailed.

Notes on which forum to use for specific topics
like OS / microsoft office / modems / antivirus / security concepts etc.

Id like to see the "essential pc software" put in there somewhere, im sure that would be alot of help to newbies and veterans alike ;)

Its there for the past week or 2!

Maybe join the 2 stickies for reviews and articles, 1 less sticky cluttering up the forum. Also some of the sites in the are from 2002
As mention earlier in the thread, a stick on cd/dvd burning/compresion etc as question about it keep appearing.
Pm me if you need a hand or is that the kind of stuff admins do.

A sticky with answers (be it explanations or links to explanations) to the most frequently asked questions here would be a welcome. How many times have people asked about RAID, SATA, Overclocking, Watercooling, "Which CPU to buy".. I mean, you get the picture.

Also, the essential PC software sticky is, well, essential ;)

    lol@boo boo

Jozi...I may give you a shout on that one. Thanks bud.

Must admit I hadn't considered the cd / dvd compression faq type one, though it is a good idea. I might need some help compiling that. I have only ever used dvdshrink, nero and dvd decrypter, oh, and avi2vcd and some other stuff....anyway, I'd need input on that.

SantaHoe: I had considered that allright. I wouldn't want to be seen to unfairly promote some companies over others though, ye know? I may put in a "popular" image beside it or something, but keep it alphabetially listed.

This is all good stuf...keep it coming lads....

Any stickies you think could go? Could be 2:1'd? (like jozi suggested) or even N:1'd?

the sticky for the DVD ripping/compression/burning could just be a direct link to www.doom9.org
    another sticky saved ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

Actually....you're so right.....doom9 is the one and only source for all dvd rip information. May just link that in a FAQ.

Think the way you set out the Free software sticky is spot on, so more of the same - alphabetically and some sort of rating system. Poll the main ones - Komplett,OCUK,PC-Look,Jes, Elara, Hi-Tide ......etc......

    Komplett :
    Pros
-price,delivery,customer realtion (Komplett Forum) Cons-GLS(Sometimes) specialized parts availability
Yada ..... Yada .................and the like for each company............

Also as you are one the cleaning spree of the year are you goin through the Reviews and Articles stickies and the Minimum Spec sticky could do with an update. Col_Loki's sticky in Tweaking & Modding could be used as a template but updated and with more of a Kannie spin Yes/No tongue.gif
If ya need a hand, give us a shout.

Thanks Nukem. Great stuff there. I may give you a shout allright. I'd say what you're suggesting could be fairly time consuming.

The rest of you: *bump* ;)

Just a general suggestion: If the relevant mods are willing, it might be best to keep all the stickies locked, suggested changes and updates can then be pm'd to a mod. That should keep the sticky threads cleaner and easier to read and get usefull info out of.

the "what's acceptable" and the Charter threads could probably be combined in to one sticky as well.

Spot on - there was a calling for this a while back because people were answering posts with advice on a subject they knew nothing about.

Here's a list of favourite free software for windows as submitted by boards users (see the unix forum for a similar thread).

This list of Windows software should be moved to the Windows forum.

I've already answered this one a few posts down (edit: actually, it's in the original free software thread). Don't be such a smart arse. (edit: that still stands).

I'm willing to include peoples favourite Unix software in the sticky as a separate list, but the list will stay. I was made a mod to have that list put up in the comp forum.

I was looking at all the stickies and there is still to many of them.

    Currently there is:
Cheap computer components suppliers. PLEASE read before asking "where can I buy x"
    Technical Sites .. Reviews
Charter - please read + make suggestions
    Essential Free Software
    Technical Sites .. Articles
    Minimum cpu/fsb/psu's
    Irc channel for tech board.
    technology - whats acceptable

The two tech sites threads should be combined.
"technology - whats acceptable" can be incorperated into the charter
"Minimum cpu/fsb/psu's" is completley out of date and is no longer valid
