DVD Burning Problem

I'm trying to burn .avi file's to DVD using Power Producer Gold but anytime I import the .avi file's Power Producer shuts down, it also shuts down whenever I import a .mpg file, I burned a DVD last week no problem with it. I tried burning the .avi file's to DVD using CDBurner XP Pro 3 but when I went to view the files on the DVD-R the files where all in .avi format whereas if I want to view the DVD in a normal DVD Player they should be in .vob format, am I correct in saying that? Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm totally new to this burning DVD's game & I'm lost. I also tried using NeroVision Express SE but when I was importing the .avi files (24 of them) it was saying that the disc was full even though the DVD-R disc holds 4.7GB, the 24 .avi files only totalled about 4.2GB.

Also could someone explain what an ISO image is? And what is meant by taking an image of a disc.

    Thanks in advance.
    SP

    ok.
vobs are a container for mpgs that allow your dvd player to play them
you need to author mpeg to vob and then burn to disc

i have no idea what power producer is so i cant help you on that

nero is saying its to much as avis are compressed, when you convert to mog they get quite large
best to think of dvds movies in terms of minutes, ie about 180 - 240 mins is about as much as youll get away with

an iso is an exact image of a disc, an exact copy, thats stored as data on your hdd.

    Thanks for that Chalk.
Ok then how do you author mpeg to vob? And do DVD burner programs basically copy the vob file to DVD-R?
Is it better to get an ISO of the disc and copy that to DVD-R? Or what is the best way for me to copy the files I have to DVD?

Sorry for all the questions, I just wanna make sure I don't waste any more discs trying this out.
    Cheers!

nero should do everything for you in the simplest way possible.

check out doom9.org or videohelp.com for VERY detailed guides ...

if your copying a disc use www.dvdshrink.org or if your downloading a disc , with an option of a iso [ and you have the bandwith] by all means go for that as it will be ready to burn.

again nero will burn everything, and as long as you have nero recode it will convert your avis to dvd.

my advise at the start is to get a re-writable disc or a big spindle of them as your gonna make a few coasters , as everyone does, no escaping it

When i try and put a .avi file into nero i get a "not compatible" msg

have you installed the binary codecs for xvid?

    http://www.koepi.org/XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe

should allow all programs to use xvid.

    im not sure,
i dont normally use nero for anything like that.

id recommend mainconcept mpeg encoder instead

    http://downloads.mainconcept.com/fdl.php?downloads.mainconcept.com+MPEGEncoder1.4.2+mpegencoderv1.4.2.exe

    demo is fully functional......

Is there any program out there that will convert .avi to DVD format so I can copy it to DVD-R? I downloaded some demo's from videohelp.com but they're trial versions and add in logo's onto the vob file which i don't want.
Do you always have to convert .avi files to vob i order to copy to DVD??? Or any other format...mpegs etc...

yeah winavi - just google for a serial key.

I got nerovision and it seems to be working fine, only problem is a 900 mb avi is taking up almost an entire dvd.

Jaysus tusky....edit that. You're supposed to be a moderator. Telling people to break the law isn't on.
