Can I ask a question (Not meaning to hijack nl)

But do you need a Ati Artic Cooler 4 for G. Cards these days ? Im in the process of buying a G.Card so if I should get one of these I would like to order it at the same time. Are they recommended ?

I think the first question had been answered, so no hijack...

I have one, but I would recommend against getting one unless you're very comfortable with computer bits. I broke my first 9800 pro with an arctic cooler. An expensive mistake. If you're not going to overclock, and you're not concerned with the noise output of your graphics card, then don't bother. The cards are designed to run perfectly with the stock heatsink / fan.

You're right that if you're not comfortable with it, you shouldn't do it. Also as soon as you take the stock fan of the card, the warranty is void

How did you break your card though?

Bet it had something to do with those little plastic nubbins (I don't know the correct term) that hold the heatsink on. Really awkward to get out!

Very true - hate those things

If you don't intend no use the stock HSF again, you might as well just crush them with a plier. HSF comes off nice and easy then and you can slip it straight into the bin :D

    Just saw this....

Basically, I was a bit sloppy with the thermal paste that came with it. Put too much on. It must have touched off one of the small transistors / capacitors / whatever they are on the card that are near the GPU causing a short.

The card was still useable, but only just. 2d had what looked like dead pixels, 3d had what looked like artifacts (though both were static....so you could still play games or whatever, it just looked like a rendering bug).

I found out afterwards that the cheapo thermal paste that comes with it is conductive, so I'm assuming that's what caused a short. I bought another 9800 pro and put the old arctic cooler on the new card, this time with more caution and some arctic silver. Haven't looked back (though the card isn't currently overclocked.....long story).
