Donating old PCs

We've just upgraded all our PCs here in the office, and we need to get rid of quite a few old PCs (Reconditioned Dell Pentium II's) + 15"-17" CRTs to go with them.

There's about 10 in total, they'll all be wiped and reimaged with windows 2k.

Anyone know of any charity or organisation that we could contact in relation to this?

    Cheers in advance

You'll be lucky. I've found one school that will take PIII's

If I'm not mistaken I've offered the PIII's to the same school unkel was looking for and no takers there.

Also make sure you have licenses for windows 2000 otherwise you are handing them financial risk, schools can get cheap licenses from microsoft but they aren't free and they aren't downgrade licenses so the PII's would want to be fairly high spec for PII's.

Best thing might be to sell them to staff / on boards/buy n' sell and donate the money.

Ta for the prompt, quarryman :)

My colleague is involved in a new school in Lucan and I arranged some pc's and parts for her through some old stuff I had but mainly stuff that was donated to the school through a post I started here on boards

I'll check with them if they'll need more PCs and if they do, I'll sure report back!

It is a primary school with only the first few years filled afaik and, like the capt'n said, software licenses are cheap for them. Reconditioned PIIs should be fine

What you really need is linux with a lite desktop. Then you'll have no problems with virus, updates or licences. But most places aren't interested in old machines. By the time they've got them running, sourced licences for software and OS. You are almost at the price of a new machine. Doesn't make sense. For parts that need scrapping theres a fee.

Try a live CD like http://www.xfld.org/Xfld/en/index.html and see how it does. Most people just need a word process and email/web access thats about it.

I have a friend in the JCI Dublin, who works with local schools quite often. One of the most common workshops held at the schools are preparing-your-CV and interview-prep type stuff - If any of the PCs are still available I can see that they go to good use in the schools, who I'm sure would more than appreciate them.

You can donate them to JCI Dublin, who can then allocate them to the schools. PM me if you're interested.

Sorry for bumpage but I have a similar question.
I have an old Pentium 1, and was wondering if any1 could offer any suggestions on what to do with it.
I formatted the HD there recently so it's in good nick and ready to use.

Asked around about donating but as you can imagine, no takers for a Pentium 1.

So any ideas? thanx in advance :D

Or use it as a little firewall. Smoothwall will make a firewall out of anything bar toasters. However as bedlam suggests - it might just be best to sent it to hard-drive-heaven...

    :)

They'd love to have them in a primary school in Lucan. I've pm'd you the details of a contact in the school. Give him a ring and he'll arrange collection of the lot

Always nice to see some positive recycling :)

Very old stuff is of interest to the developing world. There's an island somewhere who's entire IT setup consists of a web cafe with a satillite link and a few P-1s.
