Just as the title says. I'm looking for a free alternative program to MS word.

Google OpenOffice, or go to http://www.openoffice.org

If you don't want a whole office suite, and would prefer a small download try Abi Word

I'll second Wizzard's suggestion. I've been using OpenOffice as a replacement for a while now. Haven't tried AbiWord but I believe the latest version is decent enough. OpenOffice is a suite though - replaces Work, Excel and PowerPoint.

OpenOffice is the way to go, plus the Word replacement in openoffice lets you save in word format, plus loads others. It also lets you export to PDF, which I believe is something that Word has yet to offer.

And another thumbs up from me. Open Office is very good. Like the PDF export option as well.

Intriguing. In terms of functionality, how does OpenOffice compare with regards to MS Word? Is the UI intuitive etc?

Yes it is. I've found it very easy to switch from Word to OpenOffice,
