The last time Ireland won the opening game of the 6 (or 5) nations championships was in 1988 - when they went on to win the triple crown! - A good omen, surely! biggrin.gif

A solid performance and a fine beating of the Italian team. Well done lads.

Pity about Scotland... and f*ck sake, Wales!

Found the info I was looking for. 1985 was the last time Ireland won the Triple Crown and also the last time they won the 5 (now 6) nations.

Found a discrepancy between the IRFU home page and Skysports rugby page as to the actually number og time we have won both compos, Sky being more generous (and wrong to the best of my knowledge).

Here are the urls for anyone interested.

    oh well...

would 1985 co-incide then, as the last time Ireland won the opening game?...

    who knows ? smile.gif

    Either way...

Nicely done, Ireland - KEEP IT UP!

Its been 10 or so years since we won the opening game of the 5/6 nations alright. I don't think we have to go all the way back to '85. It was a great result for Ireland last saturady even if it was against the Italians. Reemeber Scotland went there last year and lost.

I agree Bard. Nice one Ireland - Let's keep it going

If Ireland can go on to beat France we have a good chance of winning the grand slam. The team at the moment is looking strong. We should beat Wales and Scotland with ENgland being the real test. Hopefully when O Driscoll and Hickie return they will give the team that extra attacking option. Both are potential Lions and are crucial in Irelands success.

the last time we won our opeing match was indeed 1988, as for the last time we won the 5 nations it was also 1985,

as for winning our first match this tear :/ well ok they did well, but Italy?

they have some fine players like the welsh soccar squad, some great players but they dont neccessarily make any kind of a good team apart from the odd good move on what is still in my opinion a weak Irish side compared to the kind of players we should be fielding at this stage

im prolly being a little too hard i agree so please no one eat my head off over this,

    Wyvvy...
