Help me choose a laptop

Right, it's my birthday in about 6 weeks and I'm trying to convince my mom and dad to get me a laptop. The laptop will be mainly used for doing homework, watching movies and listening to music. If I was playing games on them, it'd only be Counter Strike. I was looking at the Dell Inspiron 6000, the Acer Aspire 1363WLMi, and the Apple iBook. My main concerns are a 3hour+ battery life, portable, and not much more than 1,000 euro.

    Thanks.

If you are into CS: Source you might as well go for a decent laptos graphics processor..

The Dell 9300 has the Nvidia 6800Go with 256mb of video memory. As graphics processors for laptops go, this is near the higher end of the spectrum and from what I can see, is only surpassed by the Mobility X800 and 6800Ultra.

The 6800 Ultra is offered by Dell in their Inspiron XPS Gen 2 but this is not available here yet. I am personally holding out for this model here in Ireland but if not, will probably have to settle for the 9300..

The XPS2 is basically the 9300 with a higher end GPU. These two models feature a very nice high res 17inch screen along with the new Centrino processors.. The only outstanding issue I need to find out is whether the 6800Go in the 9300 features DDR or DDR3 ram. From what I can see from benchmarks, this makes a massive difference. This model also offers very good battery life and is a respectable size..

    Sample spec:

    Intel ®Pentium ®M Processor 750 (1.86 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB)
    17" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Display with TrueLife™
    1024MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2x512)
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Go graphics card, PCI-Express x16
    60GB (7.200rpm) IDE Hard Drive
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive with Software

    All for € 2288

You can lower some of the specs to make it cheaper if you like.

Thats too expensive. What ever hope I have of getting one for about €1,000 theres none for getting one at €2,000. :( My parents don't think I need a laptop so they wont spend too much.

It's their money, and by the sounds of it you don't really need it. More of a 'want'. "" indeed. Get some of your own money and add it to theirs if you want to get a decent laptop.

Most laptops for under a grand aren't going to play CS that well anyway afaik.

[rant] If you really wanted just a computer that would do homework, and watch flicks and listen to music you'd get a cheap enough desktop. Laptops seem to be heading towards being the next mobile phone in terms of fads. Feckin students [/rant]

I already have a decent desktop. I'll admit, it is a want, but I think it'll come in handy. I'm already putting money towards it. I like the look of the Acer Travelmate, but the more i think about it, the more it seems it'll end up just sitting there.
