    is there anyway in windows xp (home edition) of keeping track of individuals logged on to your machine.

    for example if you are sharing a folder and allow users to make changes to it can you check who was the last logged in or who made the changes to the content...

    cheers

    Not sure about xp home, but on my win2k machine here at work, the summary tab in a files properties show "author" and "last saved by".

    That any use to you?

    I'm not sure if this will apply in XP home.

    Go to start -> run... -> "gpedit.msc"

    Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Audit Policies.

    Switch on Auditing for Logon events and Directory Service Access. Afaik. You may need more.

    You should then be able to see all access events in the Event viewer.

    mmm... thanks for the quick replies

    first seamus that didnt work, thanks anyway

    second tzetze thanks for that but that wont work for reasons ill explain now

    basically im in college, last week i shared a folder at home, to transfer an assignment from my laptop to my desktop to print it out... i forgot to return the folder to private and today whilst doing work on another assignment decided to use the the previous assignment as a template.

    when i went to use it though it had been deleted from the folder, this folder had full write permission as i was using it at home. obviously someone on this damn network nicked the assignment and deleted the content of that folder.

    basically i want to see the ip address or machine name of the person who last modified that folder and deleted its contents from my hard drive. is there any logs or anything in XP that will show you this information?

    Short answer is no, unless you had previously enabled logging for your firewall (if any).
