Two laptops....wireless connection

Does anyone know if it's possible to directly 'connect' two laptops that each have wireless connectivity? By connect I mean can they communicate, play games etc by just being near each other and without a central hub? Basically, as if using a cross-over cable.

And if possible, and assuming both PCs are using XP (pro) one with SP1, the other with SP2, is it easy to accomplish? Just a matter of turning wireless on and searching for the other pc?
