You must have forgot the part about having a hammer in you hand while you're shaking it :)

I suppose check all the connections are pushed in as far as they'll go and that the shielding on each cable is intact. check all the cables are as far away from each other as possible too.

Oh yeah Cremo sure it's a micraphone that only picks up the pitter patter of tiny mouse feet

Read somewhere about an earthing problem on some PCs that cause this. I found specific details on some forum (don't ask me where). I just had to remove a few earthing tabs from the soundcard socket. So far so good, no funny mouse movement-related, buzzing sounds.

well if he has a microphone it might not be muted and it is picking up the mouse "pitter patter" and playing it through the speakers

I've had this before....it's caused by intereference believe it or not.

When you move your mouse, an electical current is sent through your mobo. Because your sound chip is integrated (guessing) it picks up the interference from the mouse signal. It's a real pain in the hole.

Does it sound a bit like a zip? That's what I've had before. Lots of times.

Have you an optical mouse? or a rollerball? PS/2? or USB?

    true.
But do you not think he would notice if the mic was on, when he starts to hear his mother calling him for dinner throught the speakers of his pc
(ps along time ago we used to be friends, offline, you used to call me Dave)

okay, maybe it is a little far fetched, but at least if we knew he didn't have a microphone it could be ruled out.

    (chapman?)

Yeah and then we could rule out that it was in his head all along, and then rule out that it was'nt his watch and then that it wasn't just YOU trying to make him create a thread so you could reply with such an innovative suggestion and then....
    (ring?)

    Hello,
Make sure your pc is turned off. Open your pc and remove the sound card from the PCI Slot, then place it on another PCI slot. now turn your pc back on. Try and see if it works. Hope i helped. :D

Whoa, steady on there. Next thing we know, we will be suggesting a format and re-install of Windows.

I had this problem before (and no, I didn't have a microphone). It was related to the volume of both the speakers themselves and the volume in the sound thingy in the Windows system tray.

To fix it, turn the volume down a bit on the speakers. Then open the sound thingy in the Windows system tray (double-click to show volume for everything, microphone, wav, midi, CD player). Make sure the microphone is muted AND that boost is switched off. Also make sure that no volume slider is at full volume.

Actually, moving the card is a good suggestion if the sound card isn't integrated and tom's suggestion fails. Long story. Dinner's ready.
