I've been trying to run some DVD's burnt from my digital video cam on my Xbox, but I get a message saying that the disk isn't recognised as a valid disk ??. Someone suggested trying different media, but wondered if anyone here has had success with this ?

My xbox has the Philips DVD in it and I'm using Philips DVD+RW's

    Thanks

    Andi

Didnt think you could do stuff like this unless your xbox had been chiped...

It can definitely play the legit stuff from video cam's etc, just a case of finding the right media for the right drive. There are apparently three or four different drives in the xbox depending on the age of it. The Samsung drive will pretty much play anything, but the Philips is very selective.

Someone mentioned TDK DVD's, but I dont wanna go and spend until I know the right format. I have a Christmas concert from my kids school that we bought from the school & it wont play okay that either.

I read somewhere that xboxs can be very picky about the media they read. Not sure if that's your problem though.

Perfect - thanks Quarryman - looks like the Ritek G04 is the preferred choice for most of the drives, so I'll try to track some down.

    Cheers 4 that link quarryman.

Would you guys mind telling us what file types you are burning on the cd's or DVD's to possibly use them.
Are we talking your standard media files or some fancy file types like VOB etc.

thanx in advance, just sos U know, I have the Samsung drive :D

Thompson drives were used in very early 1.0 machines, they could barely read retail XBox games. Samsung came after that, and now the Philips drive is the mainstay.
I've modded a good few XBoxes, 1.6, 1.4 and 1.1 and I've yet to come across a Samsung drive. That said, the Philips drives in a few (particularly the 1.6) seemed to be able to read most things while the one in the 1.1 was troublesome.

Thant could be part of my problem - mine is a Philips drive in a 1.1 & its very picky on DVD R. I've tracked down some Ritek G04 discs now, so i'll let you know how I get on.

i am suprised at that... i'd say nearly 1/4 i've done have been samsung,

out of the 5 i have at the moment, 3 are samsung, not delibrate, but yeah samsung are brilliant i've replaced 2 thompson and 2 phillips drives

the drives occur in all models - i've done virtually all combinations except that hitachi drive which doesn't seam to really have appeared over here.

I came accross 2 crystals bought at christmas that were samsung. I haven't come accross too many thomsons from newer boxes though.

there's a good run of samsungs in the 1.1/1.2 xboxs - seams like most of them that came into the country were samsungs

one quirk i noticed was that nec dual format burners don't seam to produce iso discs on +r media using nero that the samsung drive can read properly - they always show up as unknown - i tested this myself with my own burner and when i flashed it back ro +r only they red fine - really odd :/ - all the discs worked fine in a philips

philips are compatable with any media except master dvds and games. you could try cd-rw, thats your best bet. i had to get a samsung off ebay coz the philips is so bad.

Don't listen to this person. The only reason i created an account here is to clear up his disinformation. He has no idea what he's talking about. I have two modded xbox's with philips drives in them and they have read more of a variety of brands and flags of burns than the other two models.

And you decided to top a 18month old thread that was at the bottom and no one could see because...?
