Summer - University Outdoor League

Its been mentioned before, but here's another suggestion.

Everyone would enter their scores from the outdoor competitions they attend during the summer. Your best 3 scores would be your final score, which isn't hard to do, a double fita weekend will get you two scores.

    There could be 4 categories:
    Short Metric
    Provisional FITA
    Ladies FITA
    Gents FITA

I'll sponsor some sorta prize for the winners in each category.
We could announce it at UL intervarsity, might keep people in for the summer. And could give out the prizes at the first intervarsity in november, or maybe organise a student competition in september if we get the weather.

    Anyone interested or have suggestions?

More motivation for students not to skip on training during the summer.

I'm game. Its a very good idea. Makes a lot of sense for people to shoot the whole way through the year.

DIT have applied to set up an outdoor range in our Grangegorman (soon to be) campus. The GAA and soccer teams already train there so its possible. If we do get permission, myself Keith and Noel will be attempting to organise an outdoor shoot of some sort. Its another possibility if we can get it off the ground.

That said, there are no shortage of outdoor shoots in and around Dublin during the summer.

Good Idea... How will it work, because some people will progress from SM to PFITA and on to FITA.

You say best three scores.. I reckon the best threee at the highest category. So you could put forward two FITA scores and a Provisional FITA if you have only done 2 FITAs and the rest were PFITA.
And like our leauge now once you progress no going back...

Thats what i was thinking too, your best 3 from the highest category. That said i'll probably play it by ear, i don't people to hold themselves back in order to do better in this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 321 ✭✭span

you could have a rule that if you get a certain score a SM you have to move up to PFITA and then up to FITA if you get a certain score at PFITA

Something like 900 at SM. (average of 200 twice at 50M and 250 twice at 30M). Then 900 again at PFITA (average of 200 at 70M, 250 at 60M, 200 at 50M and 250 at 30M).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 486 ✭✭Aryzel

People tend to shoot whatever round they are able to do, i shot 900 Provisional last year, but there was no way for me to get a sight mark for 90m so i wouldn't be able to move up to a full fita.

i've no intention to do up rules or anything for this, people should just send me their scores over the summer and i'll do up a table that is fair. That said, if someone wants to run something more rigorous feel free to go ahead and do it.

I think now is a good time to start something like this, it can be simple this year, and can evolve and expand in the future, like the indoor league. Best to keep things flexible at this stage.

as regards what trig said about the range in grangegorman.... if we really wanted, and i could sleep with the right sports officers(the things i do for you lot), we could use it as the venue for the shoot in september if we are to have one. it would make up for the lack of an indoor venue for DIT to hold an indoor IV...

if dit cld organise their outdor event cld we use our summer scores as a way of ranking us, and then shoot their comp for the prizes, only one chace to score could up the fun?

like if ur best score is under 900 on sm , ur sm for the dit comp, or under 900 Inter ur that in sept?

maybe 950 id be better cos a move from 900 sm to inter wld mean no1 cld have a chance to compete agains the more experience archers in the full fita for medals????

I understand what feral said, except for 'Inter' not sure what he ment by that, but english is perfered on the forum :D

For anyone wondering the outdoor competitions have the following format:

    Short Metric:
36 arrows at 50m (on 80cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 50m (on 80cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 30m (on 80cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 30m (on 80cm Target Face)

Ladies Fita (Also called Provisional Fita for guys doing it)
36 arrows at 70m (on 122cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 60m (on 122cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 50m (on 80cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 30m (on 80cm Target Face)

    Gents Fita
36 arrows at 90m (on 122cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 70m (on 122cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 50m (on 80cm Target Face)
36 arrows at 30m (on 80cm Target Face)

Oh, and again i say play it by ear, there is a big difference between people saying its a good idea and them taking part. Look at the sagitarius league, only me and noel are still doing it. These things can grow with time, has anyone looked at how the progressed from 2001 till now. Realistically we're looking at about 10 people taking part this year, if we're lucky.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 282 ✭✭trig

substitute inter = intermediate for provisional and it starts to become legible.

Perhaps the best thing to do is collect the score cards, see how many people actually bother. In the mean time us DIT ppl will attempt to get Grangegorman shooting sorted (we want our own range anyway so it makes no odds if nobody submits scores).
In the event that DIT isn't free, I can either get a Sunday in Whitehall (Dublin Archers training ground during the summer, near DCU) or have a word with a few of the Sportslink lads and get Sinéad to charm them into giving us a day up there or something like that. Whatever suits.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 282 ✭✭trig

Oh btw, I quit the Sagi League cos my scores had gone so far through the floor that I couldn't even see them anymore. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭baggins

ok, i'll get in touch with the sports powers that be regarding a shoot in sept. we're gonna have to do it in conjunction with dublin archers though, cause we dont have enough targets or nething

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 486 ✭✭Aryzel

Noel is going to run the outdoor league over the summer instead of me, so send your scores and questions to him :D

Shot for the outdoors today for the first time this year, ended up doing my first gents FITA, :) 972 :) New PB's at every distance, although i had never shot 90 before so that wasn't too hard a record to beat ;) So i'm thinking about going to the Cork competition on 30 April/1 May. Anyone else going down for that?

Puny human! my first mens fita was 1001 :D
That said I was training 6 days a week back then, and had Tony threaten violence if I didnt make the 1000, always good motivation :)
Dont feel bad, took Bolger a couple of tries to break 1000 :)

A mate of mine called Claus back in school shot 1103 on his first attempt - absolute sickener. (That and the fact that me and him shot the above mens fita scores at a non-star Sportslink shoot back in 2000, so no stars for us)

As for Cork, too close to the exams for me, plus the weather might be questionable. Best scores in general are shot at the Summerhill shoot in the middle of the summer. Well sheltered ground, decent weather. Where I shot my 1138, and where if memory serves Keith Hanlon got some of his better scores, plus its a double fita, so you can use the 1st day to set sights / get used to field etc...

About Dublin Archers going outdoors Aryzel....

We're waiting on an insurance certificate that the corpo want before we can use the field. As soon as that comes through we'll be all good for outdoors. Until then I'm afraid, we're still stuck inside.

I assume you're shooting in Lexlip anyway, but i'll keep you posted.

    Hi all,
The outdoor leauge has started and so far Mikhail Sogrin is in first place (as he is the only person to put forward results).

I hope there will be lots more at the competitions during the summer (after the exams finish)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 419 ✭✭toxof

Good to see two more students at the competition this weekend.
There is a bit of a fight on for second place.

There were a couple of stars too this weekend.

    Mikhail Sogrin 1000 Star
Darren Daily 1100 Star (only 16, and shooting very well)

    I think thats it...

Oh yeah Sinead Cuthbert 1200 star Well done!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 282 ✭✭trig

    yeah, congrats Sinéad.
She did get the 1200 already, but I'm sure its nice to finally get the mits on the shiny piece of metal as well.

I'll give you proper scores to put down next week toxof.

Speaking of which, Dublin Archers double FITA Star is on next weekend, the 13th and 14th of August in Whitehall in Dublin.
If there are any IAAA members out there who'd like to shoot, send me a PM before Friday. As well as Ladies/Provisional and Gents, we can probably accomodate a FITA 900 (30 arrows at 60m, 50m, 40m on 122cm face) or Short Metric (72 arrows at 50m, 30m on 80cm face). Students shoot the two days for 20Euro.

A little birdie has told me that we can expect a second former Wilson's Hospital archer to (finally) post a score in two weeks time or on the Saturday. So we should have the full 8 if everyone shows.

it wasn't a bad performance by yourself either Toxof. And as for Sinéad.... well she just makes it look easy. Bit of a breeze on Sunday made things a little tricky all the same. It deserves mentioning that the guy (Martin) who beat Mikhail by a single point went on to finish second. Not too shabby

This is it!!! The final round of the 2005 University Leauge is on tomorrow.

If any of you want to come down to Leixlip to see the Irish Open or the University Shoot off, the field is right at the Leixlip-Lousia Bridge stop of the train.

Tomorrow starts at 9:30 and the university shoot-off will be on at around 2-4pm.

There will be four colleges represented, UCD, DIT, Carlow & Maynooth...
